Everyone interested in fostering or adopting a bird must attend our class on bird care prior to receiving a bird from us. This class is free (although donations are appreciated) and is open to the general bird-loving public. If there is a location listed with no date, you can ask when the next class will be scheduled at that location by sending an email to: class@mickaboo.org

The class covers these topics:
  • Proper avian care
  • Proper avian diet
  • Symptoms of illness and first aid
  • General husbandry
  • Taming and training

And much much more...

Criteria for adopting/fostering a bird from us can be found on our How to Adopt page.

We have basic bird care classes scheduled throughout the Bay Area in the North Bay, San Francisco/Peninsula, South Bay, East Bay, and Sacramento Area. For those who cannot attend a class in person, we occasionally schedule phone classes.

Register: To reserve your spot for a class, email class@mickaboo.org with the location of the class, and class date, in the subject line. If you want to adopt a cockatiel (for example), please say so in the email.

Basic Bird Care Phone Class

Criteria for attending a phone class:
  • You must have submitted an application
  • You must live out of the area or be physically unable to attend a regularly scheduled class

Send an email to class@mickaboo.org to ask that you be enrolled in a phone class, including an explanation of why you cannot take one of our in-person classes.  Classes are scheduled when the teacher is available and enough students need a class. Class dates/times are not announced on this website.  You will receive call-in information after we receive your adoption/foster application.  The application can be turned in by completing the application online or printing it out and mailing it to Mickaboo.  A species coordinator will connect you with the teacher for the next phone class.

Call-in number will be provided
after your application is received

Next class to be announced to attendees. You may do the required application online. For help with the application, contact the adoption coordinator of a bird you are interested in adopting. (Click through
to the bird's webpage, then on the "Click here" adoption coordinator link.)

*Attendance of a non-Mickaboo hosted class does not fulfill the Mickaboo education requirement in our adoption application.
