In Memoriam: Louisa Jaskulski

Mickaboo mourns the loss of one of our most dedicated volunteers, Louisa Jaskulski, who passed away in early September. Louisa was a true friend and advocate for birds in need, giving her time, love, and knowledge to the bird rescue community.

Louisa’s lifelong passion for caring for animals became her vocation when she completed the Veterinary Technician program at Foothill College, then passed the National and State of California licensing exams. She also joined the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Vets (ARAV) as a Vet Tech member.

Louisa’s volunteer contributions touched Mickaboo in many ways. She was a foster for many birds, with a particular affinity for those with special needs. Louisa said in a 2020 Mickaboo article, “They teach me patience every day, to be there for them no matter what, and to not take myself too seriously.” She also adopted birds who had been waiting in foster care for years. Many were Amazons. She patiently gained their trust and celebrated in their loyal companionship. 

Louisa shared her veterinary nurse knowledge in articles on bird health, including research on Avian BornaVirus/PDD, reading bird droppings (Poopology), and monitoring air quality. She led bird care classes, helped with fundraisers and events, and conducted phone screens and home visits. She stayed involved with Mickaboo after moving to Arizona to care for a family member, and she volunteered with bird and animal rescue organizations in her new locale.

Louisa’s energy lit up the room, and she’ll always be remembered for her kindness, her smile, and her boundless energy. She had a great sense of fun, and even danced with Bruce Springsteen at one of his shows. Her loss to our community is a deep one; we’re all better to have known her and to have her in our hearts.
