2012 Calendar Contest Entries Wanted!

By Pamela Lee

The Mickaboo Bird Rescue Companion is having a contest to determine which birds to feature in Mickaboo's 2012 calendar! We need twelve pictures – and for 2012, we’ll be using themes to illustrate each of the months!

Each month in the calendar will be themed around the events which usually occur then.  Here are a few examples for inspiration:

January: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day
February: Groundhog Day, Valentine's, President's
March: Ides of March, St. Patrick's, Spring, Spring training, Mardi Gras
April: April Fool’s, Easter, Tax Day, Earth Day
May: May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Memorial Day
June: Summer, Father's Day, Weddings
July: 4th of July
August: Ramadan, Dog Days of summer
September: Labor Day, the start of school, Fall
October: Halloween, Columbus Day, World Porridge Day
November: Election Day, Day of the Dead, Thanksgiving, Veteran's Day
December: Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa

Examples: One might submit a photo of a pigeon in pants on a beach for June!  Or a macaw shredding a tax return for April!  How about a pair of parrotlets cavorting around a sombrero for May?

See below for how to submit your picture for the upcoming calendar.

Eligibility: Pictured bird must be a Mickaboo bird - either a current foster or one adopted from Mickaboo.

Picture: Digital picture must be at least 2300 pixels wide by 1800 tall at 200 dpi. No pictures of birds in dangerous situations (like being outside without a harness or unprotected by a cage-like structure).

Story: Picture must be accompanied by a short description of the bird or the photo. The story will be published along with your picture. Your description of two sentences or less should include your bird's name and its type, such as lutino cockatiel, blue-crowned conure, or Dusky pionus. We reserve the right to edit your story for length and writing style purposes.

Submission: Send your story and description to pr@mickaboo.org with "2012 Calendar Contest" in the subject line. Put the month for which you are entering your picture in the name of the digital photo.  Stories and pictures must be received by June 15, 2011.

Judging: The five best entries in each of the twelve categories will be put to a public vote. Public voting instructions will be published in our July 2011 newsletter. All decisions by the judges as to eligibility or other contest decisions will be final.

Questions? Send questions to pr@mickaboo.org with "Calendar Contest Question" in the subject line.

Good luck, everyone!
