[Mickaboo Action] Bird Behaviorist Needed

Hi! I have been communicating with a family who has a Hans Macaw and a brand new baby. They do not believe they have done a good job with the little macaw, because he is nippy, and appears not to have any boundaries. Initially they wanted to surrender to Mickaboo but now are willing to work with the bird because they love him desperately (and of course their baby too). They are in the Marysville,Roseville,Sacto area. Can anyone recommmend a qualified bird behaviorist, who will not charge them an arm and a leg? Thanks. You can try my friend Gayle Reece, the parrot nanny, at http://www.parrotnanny.com/. I am not sure if she'd drive out there, or if she could help by phone. A person who helps by phone is Pamela Clark in Oregon, she's wonderful: http://www.parrothouse.com/pamelaclark/pamclarkconsulting.html Maggie At 06:56 PM 12/23/06 -0800, you wrote:

It's been a long week. I'm tired, and am watching the end of Notting Hill- but not near enough to the end to feel good. Perhaps I am wrong, but are they expecting too much? My Murphy is nippy with most people, but rarely with me, and I have no idea how Donna taught him "love" where he leans his head into her palm, and now mine, and relaxes. He is a joy. When he came to me, I was determined that this was his last stop, of at least 4, for better or worse he was mine, and we would work through whatever. It was a bit painful along the way, but I cannot imagine him being anywhere but with me. I don't think they should expect any interaction between the bird and the baby until the baby is at least 11, which is the age one is eligible to become a Boy Scout. Boundaries? Adult shoulders, adult arms/hands, playpen and cage. That's it, and with clipped wings, he's captive, n'est pas? I would be glad to stop by, even more than once, but me thinks we may be having this conversation with Dr. Phil in 10 years- and not about the bird! :-) Easy for me to say, after 3 + a stepdaughter, and as the only thing in this household NOT spoiled.. With any luck, I expect my birds to outlive me, and be lined up along one wall of my service, outnumbered but not outclassed by the many firefighters that I raised from a pup. Hi Claudia, If it helps, I can talk to them about raising a baby with a large bird(s) in the house. Mine are nippy towards the baby, so I've had to work on the baby more than the birds and I have few tips. I think it would be great if you wrote something up that we could add to our website, Susan! A lot of people get rid of pets because of the "danger" to their children, when really they need to teach the children as well as the birds about boundaries. I think a "firsthand" testimonial would be a great addition to the website. Actually, Deidre Spencer wrote a great article about birds and babies. I
thought we had it up on our website, but I can't find it now.

I'd love to see that. I usually point out to people that the kitchen stove is a threat to small children, but we don't get rid of it; we teach the children that it's not safe and is off limits except with adult supervision. There is no reason this can't be applied to pets as well. I'd love to have an article to give to people who are heading down this road - although I will say that in the end, the last time I had to deal with "young children and parrots" it worked out for the best in the end since the bird in question went to an even better home within a few weeks :) ~ Ailsa

Found it! Maybe Susan could expand on it and then we can add it to the
website.

Oh - and Tom -- I forgot to say, what a lovely sentiment you've written about Murphy and your birds "lined up" at your memorial service, along with the firefighters you've trained. I was at the funeral of a friend's father, who was a Fire Captain at Treasure Island for years, and I think it was one of the most moving tributes I've ever been privileged to attend. Thank you for all you have done for us in your chosen profession, and now all you do for Mickaboo!
