[Mickaboo Action] Call for Cages

Hi All! We continue to have more intake of larger birds than we have foster homes and adopters. Now that is complicated by lack of cages. I am trying to round up Mickaboo cages of the following sizes: 24" x 24" x 43" (tall or short bodied cage - doesn't matter). We have two Severe Macaws that have been taken to the Holly St. Pet Hospital in San Carlos and as soon as they are released have a newly approved foster home - BUT ONLY ONE CAGE. Due to a medical condition of one bird we need a second cage. 32" - 36" x 24" x 48" - 60" . We are expecting an intake of two more birds (Timneh African Grey and Blue Front Amazon) soon that will be fostered together in separate cages. We have a foster home - BUT AGAIN ONLY ONE CAGE. If you have Mickaboo cages of these sizes sitting around taking up space with NO BIRD inside please let me know. We will be happy to put them to use quickly. [Mickaboo Action] Foster home for a Dusky Conure?

It looks like my foster home for Pierre the Dusky Conure isn't going to work out both because the Significant Other in the household doesn't like being bitten and because there may be allergy issues. The two issues are being worked on, but right now I'd really like to get another foster home lined up so that if Pierre does in fact need to move, I have somewhere to move her to. She's a Dusky Conure who was rehomed once in the past but had to come to Mickaboo due to illness in the mother of her last family. The daughter of her last family, who was nine, was able to handle Pierre and Pierre would lie on her back in the girl's hand, so the socialization is there - although near the end of her time there, Pierre didnt' get a lot of out-time. Sounds like the end of the honeymoon period can be a bit turbulent, but since she's otherwise well socialized I'd expect her to settle down again after that rough patch. Would anyone be able to take her in, if in fact her current foster home decides she has to go? Female has "large growth" which she chews off (and it comes back) creating a bloody mess of course. Debra cannot afford vet care. The male which she "hand raised" is intact. She bought the female as her ability to spend time with the male diminished. Debra has less income and cannot afford to have birds.The 2 birds never really bonded. It took years before they even sat on the same perch. Sounds like they did become buddies however. No mating.The female started plucking herself and later developed a growth on "shoulder area" of wing. She was taken to an avian vet whose name Debra cannot remember ,in Dublin. I was not convinced this was an avian vet. Biopsy was never performed. Anyway, what was done or not done is unclear. The bird was supposed to return for follow up and was never taken back. When female had to be taken to vet for the one and only time (more than 6 mos ago) she went in a carrier. That carrier is still her cage. "She prefers it" Male is in a "large iron cage" that allows him to flap his wings. She does get out for some bathing and they are allowed out of their cages frequently and have "their own room" The birds have remained separated because of the female's wound. Debra's initial reason for calling was tha t the 2 birds no longer have the comfort of each others physical proximity and Debra has very little time for either of them anymore. The other reason turns out to be that the female needs vet care. She actually was up front about that. She was going to have the female "put to sleep". She found out about mickaboo and called instead. Female "is still friendly" Female was purchased from Feather Farm by first owner. First owner died. This is her second home. I forgot to ask about what she feeds them. I sensed a growing defensiveness so I became more supportive and less inquisitive I'm afraid. She sounded tearful towards the end of the conversation. I think I heard her smoking. I told her someone would be contacting her, maybe me, within a few days to let her know one way or the other. [Mickaboo Action] URGENT Pick up of budgie today

Calvin the budgie is ready to come out of BABH right now. Jana can take him home with her when they close (at 3) but cannot keep him tonight. Can someone pick up Calvin either before 3 from BABH or tonight from Jana (who lives in the Sunset)? He needs to go to Maria in Fremont ASAP. Please call me -- 408-286-7455. Maria

[Mickaboo Action] OT: wild bird nests / relocation

Can anyone email me directly? This morning, during work, my husband had to relocate a few nests containing eggs of "black-colored birds with yellow eyes". He contacted a local wildlife organization and they advised him to move the nests within 10 feet of the original location. Good news, so far, one of the mom's has found her nest. However, he was told that in the event there were hatchlings and the mothers didn't return, they would treat them like pigeons, go collect them, then euthanize them. We were very surprised to learn this (to put it mildly and politely), and wanted to know if there were other organizations we could call in Contra Costa County? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? WHAT??? What group told him to do that???? Only Fish and Game can give permits to mess with nests of native birds! The birds you describe sound like Brewer's Blackbirds - natives! Perhaps the group he called thought they were starlings? Starlings are not native, so not protected, but they nest in cavities. Were these nests in cavities? You should call Wildcare at 415-456-SAVE if you need to take them somewhere.
