Hi All! We have a wonderful little Severe Macaw named Maggie, whose dad is joining the Peace Corps and he is desperate to find her a loving foster home. Maggie is affectionate, enjoys taking showers with her dad, likes men and women, is a good eater, healthy, all the good things a happy bird can be. She comes with her own stuffed animals too. I'd like to add to this and say that we've had two lovebirds in a south bay veterinary hospital for several weeks simply because we have no foster homes. It's costing us money every day that they stay there. We also have another pair in a shelter that was part of the confiscation that you heard about a while back that are also waiting for a foster home to go to. We suspect that the former owners are sending friends in to adopt the birds from that case and want to get them out of there as soon as possible. The simple truth is that no one has been wanting to adopt a lovebird for months. Every time we have a class, I scan the applications to see what kind of bird the person is interested in and I have not seen anyone interested in a lovebird in months, so as a result, the lovebird foster homes are not emptying out so that a new one can come in. There are usually trends to what kinds of birds people want but so far it's not lovebird "season." I currently have 5 birds of my own (three of them large), four foster birds, two bunnies and an almost 2 year old child. This is all by myself working full time. I took the second pair of lovebirds even though I had sworn off of fostering because I have too much on my plate but there was a need. I'm hoping that someone will see my email and feel sorry for us (me in particular) and take in another bird or pair (except those that are truly full up with zero quarantine space-you know who you are). : ) Thanks for listening. We are experiencing increases in several populations -- especially the very large birds such as amazons and macaws and in the number of cherryhead conure refugees from the San Francisco flock. Finches and canaries have also increased substantially. At the same time, the numbers of incoming budgies, lovebirds, and cockatiels continue to be very high and we are having trouble finding foster homes for these little birds. While our adoptions continue to go forward, we cannot take in birds if we have no foster homes. Our greatest need, as always, is foster homes to allow us to immediately take in birds from shelters and abusive situations, in particular. To continue to function and to take in these birds that so desperately require homes, we think we need three things: (1) for our existing volunteers to consider taking in just a few more birds; (2) to increase our foster homes, which means reaching out to your friends, relatives, acquaintances and even total strangers to think about fostering, when you can; (3) IDEAS -- how can we find more volunteers and raise the financial resources we need to support our birds? Of course, the most important aspect of offering ideas is also offering help or ideas on how we can actually get those ideas carried out. I am asking you once again, our wonderful volunteers who have always responded to meet our needs, to please consider if you can help or if you know of someone who can help foster our birds. We also need volunteers to help in fundraising -- like the upcoming tour of Michele Raffin's aviaries -- and in staffing the various outreach events that are coming up in each of regions. We need to pursue every opportunity to put our name in front of the public, to raise funds for our birds, and to encourage people to foster and adopt. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Please consider how/if you can help us during this critical time. We have never had to turn down a bird in need of safety or medical care but we are coming dangerously close to that. Thank you Jayna! I honestly believe that the word "conure" in the name of these birds is putting people off - but they aren't shrill or piercingly loud, and are a truly delightful species of bird! For anyone who might like to try what is hopefully going to be a short-term fostering - we have someone lined up to adopt Willow and Ellis, but he's driving in from Idaho to do so, and there have been some scheduling snafus. I'm hoping we can make it happen in the next month or two. So if you'd like to take in a bonded pair of these little red and green cuties, this might be a great chance for you to get a feel for what it's like to live with a cherryhead.
