I don't know what to do

Hello- MickaCoo is more full than we have ever been with 78 pigeons and doves in foster care. There are 5 more on a waiting list hoping to come in. I'm going crazy and, despite my MickaCoo volunteering 40+ hours a week and the help that people are providing, I still can't keep up with all that needs doing. And I just received this email from SFACC: *We took in a young king with a left wing fracture this morning. There is a swollen, red area lump in the left carpal area I think. He is holding the wing in a normal position. Dr. Bing said fracture. Wondering if you can take.* * * Of course, we can always take "one more" but what about tomorrow? There will be another "one more". I truly do not know what to do. I CANNOT support a larger "caseload" than I already am. Unless there is somebody out there who really wants to get a lot more involved as a volunteer (raising funds, supporting foster volunteers, recruiting adopters, transporting to vets, etc.) or somebody who's ready to adopt some pigeons, MickaCoo is going to have to turn away birds like this. (I remember when MickaCoo used to say "eight is enough!" when we had 8 foster pigeons, then being terrified when we had 25 and panic-stricken at 50 fosters. But 78???!!!) *WHAT DO RESCUES DO? Resources are finite and the need is infinite. I cannot make the math work.* *Elizabeth * -- Elizabeth Until they all have homes, don't buy, don't breed- adopt. www.RescueReport.org www.MickaCoo.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGjyooh3Yo0

If someone wants to build something in my backyard ill take as many as I
can.

Elizabeth, I'll give $5 toward the building of this pij palace. Sorry it is so small of money. If you announce this via the discuss list, will you please say anonymous and not my name? Thanks. Do you get the mail that comes to the Coo? I'd imagine it is online? Chelle On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 4:50 PM, Gabriella Estrella < kittyntwinstarz@gmail.com> wrote:

Gabriella- Bless your heart and courage! With all that you do on behalf of Mickaboo and the the macaws, that is truly an incredibly generous and touching offer. I will follow up with you directly. I'm going to bring some pigeons to meet you and we can brainstorm together what would make sense. And thank you to all who have replied with ideas and info and encouragement and insight. Your support is greatly appreciated. Cheryl rescued the baby with the not-broken wing (though it was certainly a "lucky break" for him) and one of the birds on the waiting list to come into foster care died and there are two more now there waiting to come in and life goes on. Stay tuned. Thank you! On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 4:50 PM, Gabriella Estrella < kittyntwinstarz@gmail.com> wrote:

Elizabeth, Just keep doing what you're doing. Unfortunately you've chosen to rescue animals who are readily resupplied by society. It's sort of like rescuing whole fryer chickens. No matter how many you rescue, there will always be more. So with that in mind, I give you the parable of the starfish, which fits in many cases, including this one: "Most teachers know the story of the man who was walking along a beach at low tide, picking up a random starfish and flinging it back to sea, then bending over and repeating the process as he made his way down his little part of the coast. He was approached by another man who had been watching the seemingly hopeless task of returning thousands of starfish to the safety of the ocean. The second man asked the first, "Why are you trying to save the starfish? Don't you see it's a hopeless task? You'll never be able to save them all! What difference will it make?" The first man bent over once again and picked up another starfish. "It makes a difference to this one. " And threw it back to the ocean." Robert

Thank you Robert! I love that story! Thank you!
It is the truth and I am hopeful there will be a movement in SF to get Live
food Meat Poultry Market Vendors to stop selling live King Pigeons, Chicken
etc... to the public. I am sure if Foster farms was releasing poultry birds
alive to the public and they ended up in the streets, I would be some how
involved in helping them. There is another side to my last sentence related
to health code issues and animal cruelty, which I am not touching base on here,
but want to acknowledge it exists. Maybe by being involved in this rescue means
I am saving the life of animals that would have been killed to be eaten, so am I
making a bigger difference by just rescuing them and while feeling helpless that
the problem will ever end. After all personally my idea world would be that no
one ate animals and every animal had safe or natural home.
I am sitting here looking at this baby King Friday (attached), yesterdays
Squab.. wondering how they can even be eaten at all. But to be raised to be
eaten in small enclosures with no enrichment, sold to someone and tossed in the
streets to be eaten up by a hawk, smashed by a car or just starve to death...
I'll keep helping the ones I can.
I think Starfish will make a fine name for an upcoming Pij:)
Happy day to everyone!
