Thank you to Friederike and Leslie for helping with the immediate emergency of feeding and a place to go in the morning. Now- who's got foster room for a baby pij with no upper beak (will need handfeeding- easy) and the name Delmas? e Hi all, I'm in San Jose and just found PIJ with no top beak that was standing in the road under where many roost. He didn't flinch when cars drove by, so I swooped him up in a t-shirt and brought him home. He's currently on my back patio in a cage with water and mashed apricot, a little cat food, and mashed lefabers cake. I can't keep him after 6am tomorrow as I'm headed off to run an event for two days. Can someone take him tonight??? anyone know if the shelter will take him? Help. Please call. 650-644-8728 is my cell. Have left vm and SMS for elizabeth. Aileen and Amazons - lots of them right now with no quarrantine room!

URGENT help needed in San Jose for baby pigeon

Hello- Is there anyone in/around San Jose that can take this baby pigeon just for the next 24 hours while we find a long term placement for it? It is missing its upper beak and cannot eat so will need hand or syringe or tube feeding. Aileen will deliver to you tonight but we need someone to help right away! She's leaving tomorrow at 6am! Hi all, We¹re still in Phase 2 of the new Mickacoo Pigeon Coop in Cupertino if any of you can help out, that would be fabulous Robert has been the rock of this project, but we can¹t move forward without a minimum of 3 pairs of hands. We may have them, but additional hands will help this project move forward more quickly. If any of you have time Sunday July 11th, let me know. Update on the Home Visits by SF Animal Welfare Commissioners

Hello- SF Animal Welfare Commissioners Philip Gerrie and Pam Hemphill came to my house today and spent an hour and a half meeting Tookie, my green-cheek conure, Tweety, my foster lovebird, a pair of foster doves and a whole lot of pigeons. They were very interested and had lots of questions and were surprised to learn that things like teflon and cigarette smoking and candles and unsafe toys, etc. are so dangerous to birds. Then we went to see Mickaboo Pam's foster birds which include a ringneck, a sun conure, a budgie flock and two little conure friends- Bruno the nanday and Caesar the mitred. They spent an hour visiting Pam's flock and got a good introduction to the noise level that even small birds can deliver. They are definitely learning about why birds make challenging pets and that selling cute baby parrots too often results in inadequate care and endless rehoming. Right now, they're wondering if it would be possible to require education and "certification" for folks who want to buy parrots... Also- they are really excited that Mira will be presenting to the Commission and are hungry for information about the scale of the problem and evidence that supports it. I am using, from Mira's book *Of Parrots and People*, the quote that "it is estimated the average parrot will be rehomed 7 times in the first 10 years of its life" and they are blown away by that and would love to know the source of that estimate. Vinny & Mary- thank you for your offers to show them your flocks. I don't know if they would be willing to make any more visits but I will send an email to them (cc-ing you) with the offer. Pet bird sales have boomed in the past 30 years and they rank #3 in pets, right behind cats and dogs. Estimates range from 20 to 65 million pet birds have been sold in the US. Knowing what we know about the true needs of parrots and how few of those needs are even minimally met by bird owners and how likely they are to be sold, rehomed or surrendered to a shelter, it is really heartbreaking to think that people who call themselves bird lovers intend to carry on, business as usual, with no care for the pet birds, what they endure and the surplus bird crisis. SF/Bay Area Dove Foster Home Needed- will provide great outdoor cage!

Hello- We have lots of domestic doves that have come in and some that need to come in but for whom we don't have foster homes. Coincidentally, a great outdoor cage has been donated to MickaCoo (thank you Camille!) and transported and stored (thank you Katie & Tina G!)... Doves are easy to care for (fresh food and water daily) and a weekly scrape/rinse of the cage. They're small, calm and very lovely. They'll coo and make surprising little monkey hoots. *Dove 101:* Proper, safe cage Needs roof, perches & nest shelf (easy modifications) Food = dove feed, a little grit & oyster shell, greens, fresh water daily Weekly cage cleaning Replace real eggs with fake (about once a month) Doves don't- bite, chew, scream or self-pluck Doves do coo (sometimes loudly) and bathe (water and sun) and flirt and court They're smaller (~125 g) and a little more active and exciting than pigeons but no where near the energy or excitement of a hookbill. So please give some thought to fostering some doves in your back yard. We'll help you get set up! And, while you're thinking on it, please send this to your friends and family around the Bay Area.
