Rocket Dog Founder Pali Boucher has an adoption fair every Sunday from 12-5 at the Stonestown Pet Food Express in SF. It is well attended not only by volunteers and foster dogs but by a steady stream of visitors. Pali invited MickaCoo to join and yesterday Cheryl and Marsha and a bunch of pigeons and I did. Those who give have a way of receiving progress updates from the nonprofits so the donors can see how their money makes a difference. A nonprofit like Mickaboo qualifies for inclusion in GlobalGiving by a) filing paperwork (being done as we type) and b) raising $4000 from at least 50 donors through GlobalGiving’s site in a month. This last is a social networking way of “proving out” the nonprofit’s value proposition. If we qualify, we earn the right to stay in the GlobalGiving network “forever”, thereby gaining another way of keeping our message visible and, as importantly to our survival, a way of attracting newer donors. We need a volunteer to lead the fundraising effort - tracking progress toward the required $4000/50 donors, maintaining the excitement around the campaign, helping people on Discuss and their networks persuade others ( optimally NEW donors) to contribute, etc. The fundraising event occurs the month of April 2011; preparation for the event should start in March. 2) Pepsi Refresh – we all remember Elizabeth’s efforts to get us to vote online, every day, throughout January to win a grant. We did not win a grant in Feb – that said, we collectively learned a lot, including the value of reciprocal voting alliances and advance preparation. The Amish in Pennsylvania, and I suppose just about everywhere, have been known for years to be one of the worst puppy mill breeders in the United States (and probably Canada). This came as quite a surprise to me though as I never imagined these people would treat animals so cruelly and harshly. I changed my mind when I saw a documentary several years ago. They have "facilities" where they breed hundreds, even thousands of small breeds under terrible conditions.. Several times a year they hold huge sales of older worn out small breed dogs. The conditions of these dogs are beyond description, some are blind, crippled, etc. But apparently they still havea few more litters left in them, and are sold at these huge auctions where hundreds of "bottom rung on the ladder" breeders can pick them up for as little as $10, $15, $25. Newspeople who have tried to attend have been turned away and thrown off the property. Hidden cameras showed what was happening inside the barns where these auctions are held. It also showed the fields where the Amish grow their crops. A small airplane took pictures of these fields that were strewn with the carcasses of little dogs that died in their "care". They use them for fertilizer. Hard to believe I know,* but that is why you and everyone you know (who cares about animal welfare) needs to watch this documentary*. It is also why you must believe it when rescue organizations like us beg you not to buy puppies from puppy mills, backyard breeders, and pet stores that sell puppies, and who procure them from puppy mills. In the past twenty years we have taken in many hundreds of animals rescued from puppy mills and backkyard breeders, or given us by their owners who are "retiring". . The conditions they come to us in are horrific and heartbreaking. The laws are almost non-existent toprotect these unfortunate animals. Even when brought back to a semblance of good health, many are so traumatized from their experiences of living in a filthy cage all their lives, they never recover from their ordeal. Two bills are being quietly pushed through the Virginia General Assembly that if signed into law by VA Governor Robert F. McDonnell will effectively relieve farm animal owners (farmers and corporations) of all humane care obligations. It will be legal for owners to deprive their animals of food and water right up the point of “emaciation” and “dehydration.” Farm animal owners will be exempt from providing shelter for their animals in bad weather (“an act of God”) and will be legally permitted to hurt and neglect farm animals so long as the abuse is a “customary” farming practice or claimed to be. At this writing, SB 1026 and HB 1541 have been approved by committees in both chambers and are now in subcommittees. There is still time – limited time – to stop these bills from enactment into law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. McDonnell Governor of Virginia Patrick Henry Building, 3rd Floor Richmond, VA 23219 Dear Governor McDonnell: I am writing to urge you please to veto Virginia Senate Bill 1026 and House Bill 1541 if and when these bills come to your desk in the form of proposed legislation for your signature. The proposed law seeks to reduce the level of care for Virginia’s farm animals to a level that would permit extreme cruelty without penalty to the owners of these animals. SB 1026 and HB 1541 seek to amend the Code of Virginia relating to the care of agricultural animals by reducing current requirements to provide adequate food and water, to a provision that owners need only provide their animals with food and water sufficient “to prevent emaciation” and “to prevent dehydration.” The proposed law seeks to weaken penalties from a Class 1 misdemeanor to a Class 4 penalty with a token $250 fine. Even this nominal penalty would be waived to allow an owner to withhold food, water and shelter from farm animals if such denials of basic sustenance and care were deemed “customarily withheld, restricted, or apportioned pursuant to a farming activity.” There is no definition or guidance here as to what might be “customary” and nothing to protect farm animals from hunger and thirst to the point of prolonged, pathological suffering resulting from legalized neglect and mistreatment. Please do not let this happen. The proposed law amounts to total legal and moral abandonment of farm animals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If SB 1026 and HB 1541 become law, there will be no standards of accountability whatsoever for owners of farm animals. It will be legal for them to starve their animals to the point of “emaciation” and to deprive them of water to the point of “dehydration.” Owners will have no responsibility to provide shelter for their animals. This is unacceptable. Please do not sign this proposed legislation into law. It is being pushed through the Virginia legislature without being adequately addressed. Please do not authorize a law that would strip farm animals of all protections against cruelty and allow their owners to mistreat them with impunity. Thank you for your attention.
