Update on the Home Visits by SF Animal Welfare Commissioners

Hello- SF Animal Welfare Commissioners Philip Gerrie and Pam Hemphill came to my house today and spent an hour and a half meeting Tookie, my green-cheek conure, Tweety, my foster lovebird, a pair of foster doves and a whole lot of pigeons. They were very interested and had lots of questions and were surprised to learn that things like teflon and cigarette smoking and candles and unsafe toys, etc. are so dangerous to birds. Then we went to see Mickaboo Pam's foster birds which include a ringneck, a sun conure, a budgie flock and two little conure friends- Bruno the nanday and Caesar the mitred. They spent an hour visiting Pam's flock and got a good introduction to the noise level that even small birds can deliver. They are definitely learning about why birds make challenging pets and that selling cute baby parrots too often results in inadequate care and endless rehoming. Right now, they're wondering if it would be possible to require education and "certification" for folks who want to buy parrots... Also- they are really excited that Mira will be presenting to the Commission and are hungry for information about the scale of the problem and evidence that supports it. I am using, from Mira's book *Of Parrots and People*, the quote that "it is estimated the average parrot will be rehomed 7 times in the first 10 years of its life" and they are blown away by that and would love to know the source of that estimate. Vinny & Mary- thank you for your offers to show them your flocks. I don't know if they would be willing to make any more visits but I will send an email to them (cc-ing you) with the offer. Breeders and bird sellers across the country are fighting to keep selling birds

Pet bird sales have boomed in the past 30 years and they rank #3 in pets, right behind cats and dogs. Estimates range from 20 to 65 million pet birds have been sold in the US. Knowing what we know about the true needs of parrots and how few of those needs are even minimally met by bird owners and how likely they are to be sold, rehomed or surrendered to a shelter, it is really heartbreaking to think that people who call themselves bird lovers intend to carry on, business as usual, with no care for the pet birds, what they endure and the surplus bird crisis. If you're not quite sure that there really is a crisis, please read this carefully researched and supported article by award-winning animal welfare journalist Mira Tweti and/or the book that grew out of that initial effort. SF/Bay Area Dove Foster Home Needed- will provide great outdoor cage!

Hello- We have lots of domestic doves that have come in and some that need to come in but for whom we don't have foster homes. Coincidentally, a great outdoor cage has been donated to MickaCoo (thank you Camille!) and transported and stored (thank you Katie & Tina G!)... Doves are easy to care for (fresh food and water daily) and a weekly scrape/rinse of the cage. They're small, calm and very lovely. They'll coo and make surprising little monkey hoots. *Dove 101:* Proper, safe cage Needs roof, perches & nest shelf (easy modifications) Food = dove feed, a little grit & oyster shell, greens, fresh water daily Weekly cage cleaning Replace real eggs with fake (about once a month) Doves don't- bite, chew, scream or self-pluck Doves do coo (sometimes loudly) and bathe (water and sun) and flirt and court They're smaller (~125 g) and a little more active and exciting than pigeons but no where near the energy or excitement of a hookbill. So please give some thought to fostering some doves in your back yard. We'll help you get set up! And, while you're thinking on it, please send this to your friends and family around the Bay Area. Hello- I'm sorry if my passing along the info from the "Protect our Precious Animals" group (which more honestly should be called Protect Our Precious Profits) has confused folks. There is a HUGE crisis in the pet bird world. Most birds that have homes aren't properly cared for and the average parrot will be rehomed seven times in the first ten years of its life because that improper care (and sometimes even proper care) results in noise, mess and aggression levels that most people aren't willing or able to cope with. I sent that info out not to support it but to alert people that there are a lot of bird sellers fighting to keep up the business despite the devastating impact it has on creatures that we know suffer pitifully from being treated like merchandise. I support the ban on pet sales in SF, especially for birds! Sick pair of rescued pij need foster home!

Mickaboo volunteer and rescuer of many Louisa, rescued a pair of fancy pigeons that were dumped and sitting pitiful and helpless at a gas station. They are skinny and being treated for e. coli and coccidia and mites (typical stuff for abandoned, starving pij) and eye issues which may be pij pox. Louisa was already full up when she saved these two and needs our help. They need a crate indoors, meds 2x day (easy to give). I'm past full as I know are many of you... Even so- these birds need a foster home until they've recovered (about 2-3 weeks) and can join one of our foster flock aviaries. Can you help? e Elizabeth Y www.RescueReport.org
