Volunteers Needed for the Pigeons

Hello Everyone! ***Volunteers needed for ground digging project*** I live in Pacifica and am planning to install a new aviary for my two pet pigeons and to expand on the number of MickaCoo foster pigeons I can take in. I currently have a 4ft.Wx7ft.Lx6ft.H aviary which can only hold 4-6 King pigeons and has a very awkward half door. My brother Tom has volunteered to build me a new Aviary which will be 8ft.Wx14ft.Lx7ft with a five foot solid point roof for roosting and 9 foot clear roof for ample light. This will allow me to take in a lot more birds when needed and will allow me to be able to sit and hang out with the birds as well! I have some prep work I am recruiting volunteers for. I need to dig 10-12 inches into the ground which is all dirt now in the 8ft. by 14ft. area the aviary is going to sit on. This will be filled with Pea gravel for the floor and outer edges lined by pavers. So if you are interested in pitching in, I would be very grateful as would MickaCoo King Pigeons that need a place to stay so they can thrive and be places in forever homes! I will also of course provide ample food and drinks and you can play with some King Pigeons or Mandee my pocket pigeon. If we get a lot of people, it will take less time and I have a hot tub you can jump in too! Here are some possible days maybe 10am-3pm and could be less or more time depending on people. Sat. I think they use them like we use TV- we know it's not real but we enjoy the entertainment just the same... In the meantime, here's an update from Mickaboo's CEO, Michelle Yesney, and here is a link to the press release that Mickaboo published last week- http://mickaboo.org/release.pdf In a nutshell, what I would say is that, whether you (and your friends and families and colleagues) support or oppose the ban, *please- adopt rather than buy your pets. There was a hearing before the animal welfare commission last week, which was attended by a number of Mickaboo people. Several spoke in favor of the proposed ban. A great many other people spoke against it, including representatives of large breeders' organizations and pet store owners. Some of these people flew in from other parts of the state, or even from out of state. Such a high degree of interest is not unusual when a lot of money is at stake. A number of people took the opportunity of the hearing to vilify animal rescue organizations and their opinions, especially if their opinions were opposed to wholesale breeding and sales of animals. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people who feel their profits are at risk from rescue groups should hate rescue groups. It's still a little disconcerting to hear *US*accused of making profits from rescuing animals. Either they think there are lots and lots of valuable animals to be rescued out there (which supports our position about overpopulation), or else they are just talking to hear their lips flap. Some of the same people who are opposed to the ban are making the media rounds, talking on radio shows, and doing interviews. It is going to be very tempting to want to argue with them, to expose the untruths they're spreading, and to defend a cause you've given time, money, and tears to. Fortunately, you are free to do whatever you think appropriate to let the world know that perhaps they shouldn't believe everything they hear or read. We would like, however, to keep the discussion focused on our goals. We want the discussions to be about all of the animals that are abandoned, abused, and neglected and who deserve good homes, not euthanasia. Many of you are active with other rescues, and you know very well about what is happening in shelters and rescue groups all over the United States. Mickaboo believes that exotic birds are not easy pets, and that no one should be deceived into thinking that they are. We think that mass marketing, much of it deceptive, results in birds being purchased by people who don't understand how to care for them or live with them, and the results are what we in rescue see everyday. So, we want the debate to about the reasons behind the proposal to ban the sale of small animals and birds in pet store in San Francisco -- the overpopulation that is leading to heavy burdens on shelters and rescues -- not about the wicked breeders, the greedy pet store owners, or the devious rescue groups. We will be trying to take a focused position and to avoid getting into official name-calling battles in public. If you want to join the debate, please do -- but please don't say you represent Mickaboo. That way leads to chaos. And it could end up with you being attacked, or someone trying to draw you into a debate about what the organization stands for, who it was we refused to adopt to, or why our process is too long and unnecessary. You can say you're involved with animal rescue, or bird rescue, or you're part of a bird club -- whatever you think best describes your interests and position. Talk about why you do what you do, what you see and what you've learned. If you have questions about what's happening where or when, or about who's doing what - post to this list. Someone will probably be able to answer. And be sure to say thank you to Elizabeth Young, Karen Watkins, Kim Flaherty, Mira Tweti, and any others who attended the Commission hearing to testify in favor of the ban. These battles are a little different than the ones we usually fight, but the war is the same. Thank you all for doing so much for the birds. Dove Crisis- fosters and adopters needed!

Hello- We are being swamped with surrendered doves. Right now there are two- Hoo Hoo (who is VERY tame- a people dove) and his newly purchased friend (sigh) Charlie who is not. They don't sound all that crazy about each other but both need a foster home ASAP. Hoo Hoo's person passed away and his niece tried to take him in but is having problems with allergies and keeping them safe from her dogs. Doves are easy to care for and we have cages we can loan. Can anybody please make room for these two? PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY! We need new potential fosters/adopters in the pipeline. Just want to say...

Thank you! I am so honored and proud to be part of MickaCoo and MickaBoo Companion Bird rescue. I am a volunteer for mostly MickaCoo and have been doing a variety of assignments as needed that works with my schedule. Last Wednesday I was forwarded some phone messages and asked to follow up. One was a rescued abused Chicken Hen called Marcia and the other was a surrender from an owner that did not want him as he was too loud. After returning the calls I posted the requests to find adopters/fosters for the two birds to the MickaBoo/Coo discussion groups. Almost instantly I received responses and information to help me with the Dove (I am a pigeon girl). I had found a home for the chicken, but when called back to did the rescuer and Mr. Dove is in his new foster spot with Kim in Novato. I want to thank everyone who replied to me! You all are just amazing to me!!! I am really happy to spend all my free time and spare money with you and the Pigeons! I would not do it if I did not enJOY it! On Thursday, I attended the first two hours of the SF Pet Sales Ban meeting but has to leave one because I had to feed my flock, get up at 5am, but also I had to return some emails and phone calls about the surrendered Dove. Mr. Dove was too loud and after attempts to try to get him to stay with his wife and babies that only hatched on June 29, after three days it was clear he was just unwanted and if I did not get him out of there, he was going to have to go somewhere and soon. Mr. Dove was purchased at a South East pet store for $10 as a young approx. 6 month old for the hen who became his wife. The owner knew nothing about birds and still knows less than they should. This story could go on a little longer, but the point is that we all know this same story everyday! I was wishing I could have stayed and told this story at the SF Ban Meeting at the end when the comments were for the general public. I was thinking too bad we could not require all pets sold or adopted be chipped with where they came from, so we knew the real story about these innocents. (no real names and towns used, Except from KIM Thanks for opening your place for Mr Dove!!!) I just wanted to share my story of dealing with my first Chicken Rescue and Surrender. The surrender was really a very hard, difficult and uncomfortable thing to deal with but I was so supported by the Mickaboo/Coo support system. Since the owner still has three Doves,(MOM and two babies), I was successful in getting the owner of the surrendered dove to open up and give her information about her set up, classes and the pigeon talk group. I will follow up with her in a few months to see how her Doves are and if she found any training. Thank you all for this and everything I see you doing everyday! I am just down right proud! You all Rock! 2nd request - need new home for Mickaboo Cage

If anyone out there needs a cage for a foster and can come to Cupertino to pick it up, please let Mary Camacho know where it is going. Or, I think the storage space is in Oakland??? Somebody correct me if I¹m wrong, but if you can take it to storage that would be great as well. Sitting in my hallway is not working, and I don¹t have space in my garage. I can even meet you part way as it will fit in an SUV. Cage dimensions are 24²w x 22²d x 33²h overall height is taller as there is a playtop and it¹s on wheels, so there is some storage on the bottom. Bar spacing is around 5/8². Would work for those folks fostering pairs of Cockatiels maybe??? Email me directly if you want to make arrangements. Cheryl

MickaCoo received a message from a young lady who was visiting her boyfriend in Sunnyvales off Elcamino and he rescued a Chicken, standard size hen (smaller version) browns and tans colors, she is under two years. Being Brutty, not laying eggs. Calling Marcie, fairly tame. Have had her for a month, she was found with clipped wings. Currently stayingin a good size box with perch,food and water and daytime outdoor free in grassy yard. They are having trouble keeping her. Referred to MickaBoo from the Humane Society. Can anyone take in this chicken. Or have any contacts i can refer her to?
