Somewhat OT: Bird Safe Building Guidelines seeking support in San Francisco

FYI, this is, obviously, more for outdoor birds but is somewhat germane to what we do. I will post the standards document here when it is available. It might make sense for Mickaboo to send an official statement in support of this proposal. Standards for Bird Safe Buildings On October 7,2010 the San Francisco Planning Department will release a draft Bird Safe Building Standards document on the Planning Commission's October 14, 2010 agenda at http://www.sfplanning.org/index.aspx?page=2248 http://www.sfplanning.org/index.aspx?page=2248 The draft document would propose the creation of three tiers of review: 1) guidelines providing guidance to project sponsors about the potential bird hazards; 2) requirements for the most hazardous conditions; and 3) voluntary "birdsafe" certification for building owners who choose, on their own accord, to meet the guidelines. The proposal discusses potential negative impacts on resident and migratory birds, comprising suggested remedies to lessen the hazard through treatments for glazing, lighting, and other building design and operations application. Review the document and express your support for bird safe buildings in San Francisco. Public comment is accepted via email to the Commissioners or for a couple minutes at the hearing. Vincent J. I think we should. Do you want to draft it, Vinny, once we get the actual document? On Tue, Oct 5, 2010 at 10:05 AM, Vincent J. Hrovat <1217@vhrovat.org> wrote:

I can draft it after we have seen and discussed the proposed guidelines. I will want to review with Elizabeth Young and Jennifer Erlichman first about how these guidelines might help feral pigeons and SF Conure flock, respectively. It's possible that we might want to judiciously suggest additions or changes. --VH From: media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org] On Behalf Of Michelle Yesney Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 2010 10:18 AM To: Mickaboo media advisor team Subject: Re: [Media-advisors] Somewhat OT: Bird Safe Building Guidelines seeking support in San Francisco I think we should. There was/is a business moving next to Bay Area Bird Hospital in SF and the business creates a lot of smoke in the area. Something like this might allow people and businesses with birds in their building to protect their birds from this type of exposure. The proposal is at http://sf-planning.org/ftp/files/Commission/CPCPackets/2010.0182u.pdf It's quite lengthy and detailed -- and too long to post here -- but the gist of it is that "bird safe" in this context means that wild birds are less likely to smash themselves into buildings. They would appreciate comments before 14 Oct, which is their next planning commission meeting. I will check with our wild conure and pigeon SMEs. --VH From: media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org] On Behalf Of Karen Watkins Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2010 5:44 AM To: 'Mickaboo media advisor team' Subject: Re: [Media-advisors] Somewhat OT: Bird Safe Building Guidelines seeking support in San Francisco There was/is a business moving next to Bay Area Bird Hospital in SF and the business creates a lot of smoke in the area. Don't know if anyone had a chance to see this (I've never watched this program before). I recorded it on "on demand" and watched it just last night. First half was about animals "in the news" (interest generated from the Time magazine article). Was curious to see what they were going to do on Alex as well as on Kanzi (they've published no papers in two years.) Second half, sadly not advertised/promoted beforehand, was about supporting Animal Shelters and Rescues! Lisa Ling even briefly mentioned SF's proposed Pet Shop Live Animal Sales Ban. (Has anyone reached out to that camp?) http://www.oprah.com/showinfo/Ultimate-Amazing-Animals-The-Ape-Who-Has-Conve...
