Hi Delayna; I'm the tech lead for Mickaboo. I'm swamped and overwhelmed at work and haven't had time to work on our site in ages, so I'd be thrilled to have some development and coding help with things. The only catch is, our bird pages and things are all generated from our shelter management database, ASM, which has a MySQL backend. Whatever changes we make to make things more visually appealing, I'd really prefer that the photos and text still be driven by ASM as that synchronizes with all our processes very nicely and gives us a unified place to store our critical data. If you're comfortable with web development and SQL and want to give it a shot I'd be happy to have your help. Incidentally, we do have support on our site for multiple bird photos, but disabled it a while ago because volunteers kept accidentally attaching surrender documents as .JPG images and they were winding up publicly available on the site. :) On 3/20/12 7:45 PM, delayna myers wrote:
Hello All,
Awesome job to everyone creating videos of their foster birds! It such a good way to give a sense of their personalities, habits, voices and overall charm. Eventually it would be cool to have a more streamlined process for getting videos posted of all the foster birds.
On that note, there are some great solutions available that we should look into using for a better visual experience on Mickaboo's 'available birds' pages. I've listed a few javascript options below that work on all major browsers and are free for non-commercial use. Essentially, they allow you to embed video and high-res pictures without leaving the page. They also give you the option of posting galleries with multiple pictures and/or videos. How awesome would it be to have more than one picture of each bird?!
Here are some possible solutions: - Shadowbox (http://www.shadowbox-js.com http://www.shadowbox-js.com/) supports images, youtube, vimeo, google or quicktime videos. - Lightview (http://projects.nickstakenburg.com/lightview) same as above - PrettyPhoto (http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clo...) same as above but also implements social media sharing capabilities. This could be really useful for spreading the word!
If Mickaboo does have an official youtube account, all videos could be posted through that. If Mickaboo does not have an official youtube account, it might be a good idea to create one (it's easy to setup) so videos aren't spread across multiple users.
Once a solution is chosen, it would take a bit of work to port over all of the old content and add in the new content. I have some experience in this and would like to help out... but don't want to step on any mickatoes. What do you guys think?
