My feedback: #1 has another con that is the assumption most people have decent computing power (CPU, RAM, etc.) to run VMW. #2 Major con besides the cost is the ongoing effort in maintaining another server and OS platform. #3 By virtue of elimination it seems to be a good choice and has the advantage to require less overhead (end user support, ongoing server maintenance & monitoring.... -----Original Message----- From: techlist-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:techlist-bounces@mickaboo.org] On Behalf Of AMuse Sent: Monday, February 25, 2008 8:27 AM To: The Mickaboo Tech Team List Subject: Re: [Mickaboo Techlist] Roll call... Just to get some discussion rolling, I had a thought a little while ago and wanted to roll it by everyone. One of the problems we have that's always biting is us ASM: People install it wrong, break it, it doesn't work on their old computer, etc. I thought about various ways to get pre-configured, working ASMs to people and here are some of the ideas that I came up with. #1: Build a Linux VMWare image with a pre-configured ASM and distribute it along with the free VMWare Player. Pro: Would be free (cost $0) Con: I fear people would mess up their VMWare Player installs or not understand how to use them. #2: Get licenses for Citrix Presentation server, install a server with Windows Server on it, and present virtual terminals to people over the web. Pro: Would be dirt simple for them to use, work on all platforms. Con: If Citrix won't donate licenses, could get very expensive. Would need another server for the Windows Terminal Server and hosting, which could get expensive too. #3: Install "NoMachine" (http://nomachine.com) and some virtual Linux window managers on mickaboo.org, beg for donations of the Java Servlet NX presentation layer, which would present the GNOME sessions over HTTP. Pro: Same effect as Citrix but much cheaper. $500 even if we had to pay for a license for 10 users. Con: Might run into folks who can still manage to mess up a virtual Linux WM -- but at least it'd be easy for us to fix. Any thoughts? Paykar Chamani wrote:

Hi all! Are everyones' heads still above water? I've been the worst intra-team communicator lately (I blame myself and my job) but I am hoping on improving that. _______________________________________________ Techlist mailing list Techlist@mickaboo.org https://mickaboo.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/techlist
