Subject: Important Farmers' Market protest Sunday, Dec. 12
Dear Animal Advocate,
Thanks to everyone who has helped keep the pressure on the Heart of the City Farmers' Market over the past year, we have two pieces of encouraging news to report:
1. Bullfeathers Quail, one of two live bird vendors at the market, has not shown up for three weeks. In the weeks prior, the vendor had become increasingly agitated with our protests and claimed he intends to sue LGBT Compassion for libel. While we cannot confirm, his... unusual absence leads us to believe that our campaign may have affected his sales and driven him out of the market!
2. A month ago, the health department gave the live chicken vendor and the farmers market final warnings to fall into compliance of state health codes (which they clearly will not do). We were told that inspectors would be checking on the market by this week, but we have been unable to contact department officials to confirm any developments. Though it is discouraging that we havent seen immediate results, the writing is clearly on the wall: live chicken sales are a documented public health risk.
Recently, KRON 4 TV ran a story about the continued live animal violations http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxB8IqITh1U.
In October we asked for your support and it turned into a watershed moment for the campaign. With over 30 of us holding signs, passing out brochures and discussing these issues with market customers, we forced the market and public officials to take our concerns seriously.
We are close to seeing the result weve all been waiting for, but we need to give them one last shove in the right direction. Please join us this Sunday, December 12 at 10 am to protest the extreme animal cruelty and public health risks at the Heart of the City Farmers' Market. We'll provide signs and brochures -- and don't worry, the forecast is for a sunny day!
If you can't make it, please help by calling the San Francisco Department of Public Health to complain about the persistent odor and filth caused by allowing factory farmed birds to be sold at a farmers' market. They can be reached from 8 am to 5 pm on Monday through Friday at (415) 252-3800.
Thank you and we hope to see you this Sunday!
Please RSVP to this email address, if you can join us.
