Thank you Elizabeth. John is also planning on teaching it in Marin on May 8th. Details to follow. Thanks to Patrica Blau and Maggie Rufo and the Mickers up in Marin for making this possible! John may take a little break teaching the lighting class after the Marin one, since he is busy planning his Intermediate Bird Care class, so grab the opportunity to take the Avian Lighting Class while you can!!

Date: Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 3:02 PM Subject: [Mickaboo Discuss] Avian Lighting Class THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 6 in Hayward To: General mickaboo discussion I sent a reminder to everyone who RSVP'd for the class. For anyone else who has not yet committed, John is giving the Avian (Vision) and Lighting Class this Sunday.
You have no idea what a difference proper lighting can make to a bird's happiness, behavior, appetite, and what it can do to help minimize phobia's, egg-laying, aggression, etc.
We will have sample lights and fixtures, we can also sell extra 4-foot bulbs (you need to get the fixtures).
We will bring handouts, class outlines, and links to where to buy everything you need.
We can car pool from Berkeley with one more person (Julie Schroeder is taking up one space).
Please read the information in the link about parking.

* Avian Lighting *
Birds are the most visually-oriented of all vertebrates and have one of nature's most sophisticated visual systems. Their vision evolved under the sun - an environment far different from that of the modern human home. This class will cover how and what birds see, what birds use light for, and how to build an indoor lighting system that simulates the qualities of sunlight.
Topics Include:
* How and what birds see * What birds use light for * Why home lighting is inadequate * How lighting can affect behavior, diet, screaming, phobias, and sleep cycles * The role of UV in avian vision * Characteristics of the ideal avian light * Current options for avian lighting * Which bulbs to use and which to avoid
There is no charge for this class. However, donations to Mickaboo are always welcome.
We will have sample lights and fixtures, and some bulbs to purchase at the class. Next Class
Date: Sunday, March 6, 2011
Time: 1:30 to 5:15
We will take one or two short breaks. Please arrive 5 minutes early to fill out our class list and obtain our handouts so that we can start on time.
