Help Needed: Lots of King Pigeons being dumped in Santa Clara!

Hello- Last week there were a bunch of kings dumped at the Our Lady of Peace Church in Santa Clara and, thanks to good samaritans (and now MickaCoo's newest volunteers) Jaclyn & Rod, 7 of them are safe and being cared for. At least ANOTHER TEN have been dumped by a couple believed to speak Vietnamese. Three pigeons have been caught, one killed by a car and the fate of the others still TBD. We're absorbing the healthy, aviary-ready birds into foster aviaries and have 4 sick one in special care but are going to need help for any more sick or injured ones that come in. (Short-term foster in a dog-crate on a heating pad with likely twice daily meds and a vet trip.) If you can help foster sick birds OR if you speak/write Vietnamese (or know someone who does) or if you are in the area and can help stake out the area, please reply to me (AdoptKings@gmail.com) and to Jaclyn at jaclyn.alderete@gmail.com Also- four of the original seven caught have needed vet care and we know that at least of the three caught today will too. If you are able, please donate towards the cost of these poor birds care. Three were sick BEFORE being dumped (Paco, Lupita & Francis) and one was damn near killed by a hawk (Mogie). The link for donating is here- http://www.rescuereport.org/2009/09/donate.html and include "Our Lady of Peace Pigeons" in the comments/note section. Please share this with others as well. We've been too busy dealing with all these poor birds to get them up on the website or blog yet but that will be coming- stay tuned. Here's a link to some pictures on Facebook- http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/album.php?aid=289581&id=729421208 -- Elizabeth Until they all have homes, don't buy, don't breed- adopt. www.RescueReport.org www.MickaCoo.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGjyooh3Yo0

Can anyone connect with the local papers about this?

SVACA is the animal control authority for Santa Clara - perhaps they can
help?
Did we remove the chicken and the dove?

Here's Jaclyn's initial write up and a picture of the first 5 that were
caught (see below).
I cc'd Linda Goldston (SJ Mercury News) on early emails about this but never
heard from her and haven't myself had time to do anything else PR wise. I
know Jaclyn and Rodney are trying to publicize this within the Norther and
Southern CA pij rescue communities and via Facebook.
We could use help with PR. I barely have time to write THIS email let alone
any others.
SVACA will pick up the birds if they are contained but seems to have little
interest/ability beyond that.
*Our Lady of Peace Pigeons were dumped at a church in Santa Clara, CA. Three
of them were attacked by hawks, but two miraculously suffered no significant
injuries. Mogie (you can see her in the next picture) is a different story.
She had puncture wounds and was in pretty bad shape, but with proper
treatment and care she is on her way to recovery. Paco and Lupita suffer
from respiratory infections and Francis has bumble feet. It is clear these
beauties were neglected by their previous owner. We are working very hard to
get these birds in good health and into loving and safe homes. *
**
*A little info about these birds. The Chinese call them Chinese Doves, some
call them Wedding Doves, but they are usually known as King Pigeons. They
have been bred and domesticated for generations. Contrary to popular belief,
they are NOT wild and have virtually no survival skills. They are often
released by people who believe they are saving them or setting them free. *
**
*RELEASING KING PIGEONS DOES NOT MAKE THEM FREE, IT MAKES THEM FOOD! They
have no chance of surviving on their own. They will either starve since
their foraging skills are non-existent or they will be eaten by other
animals, often hawks who eat them alive.*
*They are beautiful birds with unique and big personalities. They are calm
and docile and make great pets. They can become very bonded to their owner
and absolutely love affection. Someone described them as "dogs with wings".
They usually come in mated pairs and are the most romantic birds ever! I saw
two lovers (both disabled) making out and grooming each other today. *
**
*They are very easy to take care of and are hardy and adaptable birds. *
**
*Until recently I knew nothing about King pigeons. But after meeting these 5
(there is one more not in photo) I really have an appreciation for these
peaceful birds. I hope you've read just a little of this and tell others
about these wonderful birds that usually suffer a horrible fate in shelters
and in the wild, both places they do not belong.
