Re: [MickaCoo] [Mickaboo Discuss] Question re: Craigslist?

MickaCoo volunteers post to craigslist in SF, SJ amd Sac for pigeons and
doves, as time and flaggers allow. Flaggers have been less of a problem
lately, I believe. (Cheryl D- What's your MickaCoo craigslist posting been
like?)
And just my opinion- if there is someone available to do it, I think it is
important to post to places (like craigslist) where people would go to "get"
a bird (whether by buying or through adoption). Ads need to be good, clear,
professional and fall within the Terms of Service.
Thank you, Priya, for raising the topic.

That's what I was thinking Monica, we don't have to respond to the haters. People might be interested in getting a bird, and just go straight to craigslist. If they truly are interested they'd see our post about what we do and what we offer, we could post for adoption events, or upcoming BBC classes. Even if they don't adopt from us, at least they'd know how to take care of the bird they do get. I don't see how it would be like joining the dirty pigs. There will always be those ignorant people out there that think rescues are greedy, but so what? Why should we let them discourage, or supress us? As long as we don't respond with hateful words/at all, I don't see it being a problem. Hopalong does it, ARF does it, even county does it. I'm sure they all get hate mail too, but they're getting the word out there that they have pets that need homes, and that's what we would be doing too.
When talking to my friends/coworkers at my vet clinic (including the doctors) about what Mickaboo does, probably 99% of them didn't know that a parrot rescue even existed, and they all are animal lovers/work in the field... 3 of them own birds they bought from Petsmart, but said had they known about Mickaboo they would've adopted from us. That's 3 conures we could've gotten out of foster care, and 3 more birds we could've helped.
I hope I'm not rambling, I figured this is a free way to advertise on a popular medium and get the word out that we exist, and our birds need homes.

I have always seen the bunnie rescues advertising their classes on bunny care on craigslist, They also place some ads near easter where they tell you to please not to buy a bunny for your kid as an easter present because bunnies are not as cuddly as they look and your kid will lose interest on them (that s how I got discouraged from bunnies awhile ago, when I was still looking for a "cuddly pet" ).....that may be something very worthwhile for us =). I am sure we will get some people who would like a free bird, but among them, I am sure there may be some very good people, as well,, right? With any rescue it is bound to happen we will get people who just want a free bird, but if we have someone willing to screen those, I think it s a win win situation, right? Monica

Hello! I have been posting to Craigs list nearly every week (or so) for the
King Pigeons and recently added a separate Ad for Doves almost a year. We have
found a few good adopters from this. We also attracted a few surrenders as
well.
There are a lot of pro to posting to CL (Craigs List), it does find adopters and
also makes more people aware of our rescue work. I think the networking with
the public is great.
There are a few cons, but I endure these for the Pigeons and Doves. They are
sometimes the ads get flagged (specially in Sacramento), so I have added this to
the bottom of my ad:
"100% of the MickaCoo donations are tax deductible and go directly to vet care
for sick or injured pigeons. MickaCoo volunteers provide free safe foster care,
supplies and food for birds waiting to be adopted, please do not flag our ad, we
comply with all the Craigslist rules, any concerns please reply to this ad, with
much appreciation".
However if they get flagged I continue to repost them back up.
I have a CL account and you can manage you ads from the account and it makes
posting easy as long as my computer does not get weird about putting on
attachments.
The second Con is Spam. I use two Email addresses for CL. My CL account is in
one and the address I put within the body of the ad is another. This way I can
manage the amount of spam better.
I will post up my ads shortly and you can all go search for Pigeons and Doves in
the bay area and see them.
I have not posted in Sacramento in a while because of some flagger, but I will
try again soon. We also sometimes post up for one bird as well.
Hope this helps
Have a wonderful day! I am off to work on my new BIG aviary!
