Not sure if someone may have already posted about this, but there are some good outreach ideas listed in this Born Free newsletter.

Also, a good article by Avian Welfare Coalition here:  http://blog.buzzflash.com/node/12086

Together, We Can Achieve a Winged Victory!

Dear Friend,

What’s that you see floating gracefully toward us on the horizon? Why it’s National Bird Day, a mere month away!

Every Jan. 5, Born Free USA teams up with the Avian Welfare Coalition to celebrate the beautiful and diverse winged creatures of our world. We also call on activists to take action on behalf of captive birds — to discourage their sale in stores, to improve standards of care for birds who can’t be returned to the wild, to stop the smuggling and international trade in wild birds, and to do whatever else can be done to keep birds flying free.

We want you to embrace the spirit of National Bird Day and spread the word. Visit our updated website to download or order colorful 2011 posters, order our new NBD Teachers Pack and read about special events throughout the country. We’ll challenge and entertain you with our interactive Bird Call Quiz, nurture your artistic side with origami cranes, and give you a chance to win a pair of high-powered binoculars in our State Bird Count contest.

In the field, Born Free USA is helping birds in a very tangible way in Honduras, where a project we helped to fund monitors nests and combats poaching and other threats to a small and imperiled population of macaws.

The presence of birds, free from exploitation and abuse, enriches all of us wherever we live or go. Join us in doing what we can to keep our feathered friends unfettered — out of cages and in the wild.

With gratitude,

P.S. Two colleagues of mine, Jillian Hacker and Lorry Marvin, are teaming up with Lorry’s husband Chad and me to “Run for the Monkeys” in Sunday’s California International Marathon. Please consider helping us as we raise funds for the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, home to some 500 rescued monkeys!
