I emailed this Sustainable Ag program about a pigeon shoot that was listed as one of their events....The shoot is now cancelled :) Doubt I had anything to do about it...but at least its one more win for Pigeons :)

Just an FYI – the event you inquired about was just cancelled, per an email I received. No pigeon shoot in West TX in November.

Best,

Peter

Priya – thanks for your note – and, certainly, what you describe does exist, and I am not here to defend or condone that practice. There are other forms of hunting conducted as well. Again, I would be happy to have a conversation with you --- with the understanding that HMI’s primary purpose is not about hunting. Our mission is to educate people to manage land for a sustainable future – and to assist ranchers, farmers and land stewards in becoming more productive in ways that are in concert with nature. In that context, we do work with farmers and ranchers who conduct hunting enterprises – both for culling purposes, and for economic benefit. Those who work with us tend to address the hunting aspect in ways more responsible than what you may have read or heard, or described in your previous note. I cannot vouch for or speak to each one of them as to what they do in each case. I can say generally speaking the folks we deal with are sensitive to these issues -  in ways that others aren’t.

It looks like you are doing some good and interesting work regarding the companion bird rescue organization.

Again, thanks for your note. I’d be happy to have a further conversation with you at any time.

Best,

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your response. What I've seen of pigeon shoots are people putting new fledged birds in boxes on the ground, and then lifting up the box and shooting the barely flighted bird. Then throwing the half alive bird in a bucket full of other barely alive birds to suffer and slowly and painfully die.

Are there other ways that this occurs?

Thank you,

Priya Tuvell

Priya – thank you for your recent email regarding hunting. Many very responsible ranchers in Texas with whom we work include hunting as part of their holistic goal and address the issue accordingly as part of an overall ranch and land stewardship plan  --- and not mindlessly. Indeed, it can be a controversial subject, and we are aware of that. We appreciate your writing to us, and I would be happy to address the issue in more depth in a conversation at any time. We appreciate hearing from you, and your feedback.

Best regards,

Peter
