MANY of the chickens, quail and chukars that Mickaboo helps to save from shelter euthanasia come from this twice-weekly market in SF. And, after they end this cruelty, I'm very hopeful that they will turn their attention to the heartbreak of all the baby king pigeons sold live for home-slaughter at the age of 4 weeks (that keep me & MickaCoo SO busy).
Dear Animal Advocate,
Several weeks ago, the Dept. of Public Health held a hearing with the U.N. Plaza Farmers’ market manager Christine Adams and live poultry vendor Raymond Young to give them their final warning to comply with health laws, or have their permits revoked. We’ve been since documenting and reporting flagrant and defiant continued, while patiently waiting for the Health Dept. to proceed with enforcement.
Last night, KRON 4 TV’s Stanley Roberts ran a news story about violations of the “no live animals in the market” law, which should put more pressure on the Health Dept. You may watch the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxB8IqITh1U.
This would be a terrific time for people to contact the health department to complain about the health violations, to further pressure them to enforce the laws and revoke the permits. You can reach them at (415) 252-3800 from 8 am to 5 pm. (Don’t worry about the future of the market itself – if the permit for the current nonprofit management organization is revoked, management would simply change over to the city’s Real Estate Division.)
Also, it would be good to post comments on the YouTube video’s page!
Thanks,
Andrew
