Thank you to Josette for her 911 rapid response!My heater guy is currently here and working on things. Turns out the vent duct is stainless steel (!) and lined with at least half inch thick red clay (brick-lined!) and is undoubtedly the sturdiest thing in my house (and exceedingly overbuilt to vent air if you ask me).We're working on it...I'm still going to need a roofer to secure the top so as not to have this happen again.What a day. For me and the bird, I'm sure.
