We've got 3 dogs all rescues (6-90 lbs), 5 birds (4 of them rescues), 9 tarantulas, 5 millipedes, 2 scorpions, 500 madagascar hissing cockroaches, 3 cave cockroaches, a rescued bearded dragon, a rescued box turtle, 2 rescued snakes, 3 bee hives, 3 fish tanks and in my spare time I homeschool my 2 kids and make cruelty free feather jewelry as Art For The Birds to support my favorite 2 bird rescue organizations Mickaboo and Mickacoo!!
Blended families are WONDERFUL!!!

We have 6 dogs (3-12lbs), 4 cats, and 4 birds. The dogs help clean the bird room floor, and always hangout under the birds. They've learned that bird drop yummy things to eat! This does mean that sometimes they get bird poo on their heads, which is kind of funny :-p

When we first got the birds, we made sure to have my Senegal bite everyone. Just a paw or something while we were restraining the furry 4 legged very well. It didnt cause damage, but made everyone scared of the loud things with the beaks when they are out of their cages. Dogs and Cats give birds a wide girth now, and of course, they are NEVER left out without someone sitting with them, just in case.

Every once in a while, my moms CAG will chase after our 3.5lb toothless and emotionally scarred Yorkie girl and try to bite her. Poor Tootsie is terrified of Nikki CAG :(

Its definitely possible to have birds and predatory pets if everyone is trained properly (unlike my CAG...), and/or completely separated from the birds.

I have big birds and three small dogs, so the dogs don't mess with the birds. And our one cat stays far away when the birds are out. I do have a short "fence" that I use to keep the dogs away from the cages. But I do this to keep them from rummaging under the cages and strewing paper and poop all over.

The dogs actually love the birds. At dinner time the birds feed them.

I can provide a pic of my cat, Bubba, lounging next to Lucky on the top bunk of my son's bunkbed. Lucky was in her cage and we saw  Bubba come into the room. Rather than assume that she would want go after Lucky, we watched and were within a safe distance to grab her if need be, but she walked up to Lucky's cage, sniffed her with indifference (the way only cats can do) and plopped over with her back to Lucky's cage. It was a nice first step for both Bubba and Lucky.

Now, just to be clear, if Lucky showed any signs of being in distress, I would have removed Bubba (since Lucky is recovering from a broken leg), but she didn't so I let them be and kept a watchful eye on both. I think people just want to assume the worst, which is probably a safe assumption, but as we know, animals can surprise us and frequently do.

One of the comments we hear frequently at adoption events is “I can’t have a bird – I have cats/dogs”.  Now, I *know* cats/dogs/birds can co-exist with a bit of extra effort.  I’d like to put an article about that into our upcoming newsletter, sooo may I ask those of you who *have* cats/dogs and birds in their households to write to pambudgie@yahoo.com?  Just a blurb about what you do to keep your birds safe from their traditional predators (cats/dogs).  And if you have a picture you want to share to illustrate your point, that would be fabulous too!

Annnndd finally, if we have any writers out there who would like to pull all of this together (by mid-December) – let me know at pambudgie@yahoo.com!
