We've got 3 dogs all rescues (6-90 lbs), 5 birds (4 of them rescues), 9 tarantulas, 5 millipedes, 2 scorpions, 500 madagascar hissing cockroaches, 3 cave cockroaches, a rescued bearded dragon, a rescued box turtle, 2 rescued snakes, 3 bee hives, 3 fish tanks and in my spare time I homeschool my 2 kids and make cruelty free feather jewelry as Art For The Birds to support my favorite 2 bird rescue organizations Mickaboo and Mickacoo!! Poor Tootsie is terrified of Nikki CAG :( Its definitely possible to have birds and predatory pets if everyone is trained properly (unlike my CAG...), and/or completely separated from the birds. Rather than assume that she would want go after Lucky, we watched and were within a safe distance to grab her if need be, but she walked up to Lucky's cage, sniffed her with indifference (the way only cats can do) and plopped over with her back to Lucky's cage. It was a nice first step for both Bubba and Lucky. Now, just to be clear, if Lucky showed any signs of being in distress, I would have removed Bubba (since Lucky is recovering from a broken leg), but she didn't so I let them be and kept a watchful eye on both. I think people just want to assume the worst, which is probably a safe assumption, but as we know, animals can surprise us and frequently do. I would guess that the birds are killed. Their necks might be snapped (if they are lucky) or they might be sold to "feather merchants" that provide birds to hunting dog trainers, pigeon-shooters and goodness knows who else. (If the trapped birds were released, they'd aim for home and many would make it.) Pigeons are smart, gentle and loyal and they grieve when they are widowed. This is a terrible thing to do to any animal (and often a scam for customers). MickaCoo doesn't have the bandwidth to take on this industry but please, if you or anyone you know has a problem with pigeons, tell that they need to BLOCK the ledges and nooks and crannies (pigeons are cavity nesters) and the pigeons will go away. Trapping and killing pigeons is only a very short-term solution as new birds will move in to take advantage of the nest and roost spots that the trapped pigeons were using. But I looked at a house today where 5 pigeons had been abandoned. Looks like the old owners had a pigeon coop in the backyard (homing pigeons) and 5 got left behind. Poor things were looking for water and food. I went to Target and bought some food, water and containers to put in it and went back. Only 1 pigeon was there at that time, but the others will be back as they are family and live there. (pigeons mate for life and usually their kids stay unless someone removes them). Poor things. Do you know anyone who is a pigeon person?

I wanted to cross post this. Muttville is a senior dog rescue I volunteer with, and the things they do are absolutely amazing.
