clarifying the new shelter hours
[image: flower-top2-1.gif] [image: flower-top2-2.gif]
*Dear Friends,
*For those who don’t know already, beginning Saturday, July 6, and until
further notice, Animal Care & Control is closed to the public every Sunday
and Monday. The reason for the change is to maintain the high quality of
service in a time of reduced resources. On these days, the shelter
operations are similar to holidays.
Volunteers will also have new hours. ACC is also eliminating the late shift
for Animal Care Attendants and Shelter Service Reps, and the graveyard
shift for our Animal Control Officers
(1:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m.).
*The “do’s and don’ts” for days that ACC is closed (Sunday, Monday, and
Holidays):
Do*...
- Do volunteer! Volunteers are welcome every day, with slightly
shortenedhours, starting at 8:30 a.m. (dogs) and 11:00 a.m. (cats and
small
animals). All volunteers must leave by 6:30 p.m., except for Wed. (7:30
p.m.).
- Do hold stray animals until Tuesday if you can but otherwise, bring
stray animals to ACC from 6:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. (during regular front
desk hours of 11a.m.-6:00 p.m. or by calling (415)
554-9400<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?FriendsofSanFrancisc/81a90f2410/7cb5f2dce0/4a7c9641…>to
ensure someone can receive them). If you find an
*injured *stray between 1:00 a.m. and 6 a.m., please bring them to Pets
Unlimited, 2343 Fillmore St. SF. If you find injured wildlife, please
call 554-9400--do not handle yourself.
*Don’t*...
- Don’t come in for adoptions, licensing, dog walker permits, or
redemptions on closed days.
- Don’t bring injured strays between 1:00 and 6 am. Call (415)
554-9400or bring them to Pets Unlimited.
- Don’t surrender pets or bring strays on closed days, if you are able
to keep safely until Tuesday. For owners who must surrender their pets
immediately, the SPCA takes owner surrender appointments or ACC will accept.
*A few key ACC statistics…*
To put into perspective the need for more ACC funding, here are some facts
and figures about ACC services to share with your friends, family, and
other animal lovers.
- ACC’s Annual Budget in Fiscal Year 11 (July 1, 2011–June 30, 2012) was
*~$4.2 million *(Compared with the SF/SPCA annual budget of *~$22 million
*).
- Number of animals taken into ACC: *~10,000* (SF/SPCA accepted *~5,000*
).
- *The Live Release rate for cats/dogs at ACC* (number of animals
adopted out by guardians or rescue groups, plus the number of animals
redeemed by owners) is *~85% *compared to National average of* ~36%*.
*S.F. Bay Area County Animal Control Services Cost Comparison for 2011
(survey by Ken White of Peninsula Humane Society)*
The “cost per resident” has long been accepted as a meaningful measure
within the animal control community. No efforts are made to adjust for
various types or levels of services provided which can, in fact, vary
greatly between communities and even within a single county if divided into
several jurisdictions and served by more than one agency. No adjustments
are made for nonprofit dollars used to supplement this spending, either by
a private humane organization or a “friends of” auxiliary. This is a simple
“how many government dollars per person” compilation.
*Services provided exclusively by ACC (and no other organization in the
city):*
- Accept *all *at-risk animals, wild and domestic, in any
medical/behavioral condition
- Adopt out *all *species of domesticated animals
- Enforce animal control laws, investigate animal abuse reports, and
respond to animal-related emergencies (Field Service Officers)
- Provide shelter care and quality of life enhancements for animals in
protective custody
- Provide pet lost and found services
- Educate the public about interacting with wildlife (i.e. coyotes,
raccoons, skunks, etc.)
- Licensing for resident dogs (and voluntarily cats)
- Provides animal-related services for people as well as for animals

recovering at ACC, gets a kiss from shelter rep Craig O'Brien.
ACC will continue to care for and protect SF's animals. *
Thank you for all you do for the animals!
