Re: [Media-advisors] Petition through Care2

I think the notion that pet birds do not have the same "rights" as dogs and cats offers a sense of injustice that needs to be righted, so I might pick that one, but it seems to me that it would have to linked to some particular legislation or something that brings a deadline with it, and a sense that something COULD change if you sign the petition. It seems like a deadline is a useful tool for these petition sites. p On Sat 10/27/12 1:17 PM , "Vincent J. Hrovat" 1217@vhrovat.org sent:
petitions always about particular things
Care2 has a petition entitled, “Tell us your animal adoption story”, in which people are supposed to send an open-ended text response: While the petition has almost 80,000 signatures, it looks at a glance like less than 10% of them have any actual adoption story with them – just a signature. So I’m not sure if the idea’s working out quite as well as they’d planned. If we could get as many people across the country to sign off that they understand the pet bird overpopulation problem and support the concept of rescue/adopt instead of breed/buy, that would at least be 80,000 people who know who we are. It may change a few minds or enlighten people in the process. This may be soft-dollar benefit but is better than nothing. --VH media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org] Jonathan Harris Saturday, October 27, 2012 12:30 PM Mickaboo media advisor team; Mickaboo administrative staff; Mickaboo media advisor team Re: [Media-advisors] Petition through Care2 Aren't these petitions always about particular things (a piece of legislation that we should support; an animal condemned to die or in living in horrible conditions we want to save; a cruel facility we want shut; a demand for prosecution of an abuser)? I guess there are exceptions (broader requests that humane or protective laws be enacted), but having a specific target/purpose can be an advantage. - jh -----Original Message----- j From: Michelle Yesney Sent: Oct 27, 2012 12:16 PM To: Mickaboo administrative staff , Mickaboo media advisor team Subject: [Media-advisors] Petition through Care2 Following MickaCoo's success in their release of an article about Elizabeth and the funding of MickaCoo, we are also interested in getting our message into a national format. Pam is working with Tammy to prepare a release about the founding of Mickaboo to the Care2 newsletter/blog Internet outreach -- I receive their emails, but cannot think of a single category they fit into. Check it out - it's a very interesting mix of information. They are willing to attach a petition to the story if we have an issue or other message we are interested in sponsoring. There are lots of messages we are interested in, and some issues that are more important than others. In our first outing of this kind in a national outlet, we also need to take context into account. Please tell us what you think should be the purpose of a petition at this time. There are lots of possibilities (educated pet ownership--don't buy on a whim; the SF example--don't sell pets in retail outlets; upgrade animal protection laws to give the same levels of protection to birds that are routinely provided to dogs and cats; etc.) We don't have a lot of time - please reply within 24 hours of this email. You can email me directly if you have questions or want to discuss something, or hit "Reply All" to trigger a discussion. -- Michelle _"Corporations are not people.
