Re: [Media-advisors] Fwd: ANNOUNCING THE PARROT CARE PROJET &NATIONAL CAGE XCHANGE CAMPAIGN

Did you notice that her "co-sponsor" is Omar's Birds - a chain (albeit, a small chain) store that specializes in selling birds, especially baby birds.

Yeah, I just got this too. I was intending to post the link to various lists I'm on. Certainly Mickaboo can & should put a link on our Facebook page. Will Mickaboo be part of this campaign? How and in what official capacity would determine what we say on our main Web page or in a press release. But in any case we might think about how to take advantage of
media coverage Mira has generated to get out whatever message we think most appropriate or important. j

Im not sure if anyone else was aware of this but it is news to me as of this morning. If we want, I can pull together a press release stating
Mickaboo approves / appreciates / is part of this campaign. Or perhaps someone else is already working on it. ****

Smaller people don't live in smaller houses and smaller birds shouldn't live in smaller cages. All pet birds, regardless of their size, need to be in the largest space possible.
In the wild, parakeets, cockatiels, and finches, can fly faster and further than Amazons and macaws. If anything, the former need large cages to fulfill their inherent energy and need for quick flight and movement.
The fact that a bird can fit into a cage, doesn't mean it should.
That's the main message of this campaign.
Our campaign aims to change the way we view and care for parrots. ****
For the first time in the US there are now cage-size minimum standards that parrot owners across the country can adopt. ****
****
The last national campaign for birds of any species was 125 years ago, in 1886 when the National Audubon Society was founded to save egrets, herons, and other native bird populations that were being decimated for their feathers to decorate wealthy ladies' hats. Audubon was successful in saving millions of birds extinction. ****
****
This multi-year Cage xChange Campaign can be just as impactful ****
to the lives of the estimated 30 million pet parrots ****
(many of which are endangered species) living in North America today. ** **

Thanks all. I will STFU (acronym which stands for "not talk") about this in
out-

how and
if we want to align Mickaboo with this.

CAGE XCHANGE CAMPAIGN
I don't know anything about Omar's and I don't know if this is related but
when I last spoke with Mira about this project (a couple of months ago),
she mentioned how she was making an end run around the breeders' and pet
stores' lobby groups' (or whatever you call them) opposition by focusing on
the cages. Her intention was to show consumers just how much space and how
costly it is to take proper care of your parrots. Her intent was to help as
many as she could that are already in cages to have a better life while at
the same time discouraging as many people as possible from ever buying a
bird.
I believe she plans to have people bring in their old cages (to different
sites on different dates) and exchange them for much bigger, better cages
(but at low cost) which she is getting at a huge discount somehow (part of
the end run). She also expects to gain lots of data/proof/photos on how
inappropriate the cages are for most birds and to use that in future
efforts.
It is my understanding that Mira doesn't believe birds belong in the pet
trade and that she doesn't support (and in fact opposes) breeders.
I'll share additional info if I get it.
