Re: [Media-advisors] FW: [Mickaboo Discuss] Fwd: ANNOUNCING THE PARROT CARE PROJET & NATIONAL CAGE XCHANGE CAMPAIGN

The article mentioned is in the Sacramento Bee at http://goo.gl/HGArd , I just noticed that the article does mention that releasing parrots is illegal but makes no mention of how many of them die after being released or escaping or how scant their chances are after they’re released or escape. The article just mentions that wild flocks are thriving. --VH From: media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org] On Behalf Of Jonathan Harris Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2012 11:16 AM To: Mickaboo media advisor team Subject: Re: [Media-advisors] FW: [Mickaboo Discuss] Fwd: ANNOUNCING THE PARROT CARE PROJET & NATIONAL CAGE XCHANGE CAMPAIGN Sorry, my computer has been in the shop since Friday and my INBOX got maxed out, so I missed the original reference to the article in this thread. -j -----Original Message----- From: "Vincent J. it mentioned that some parrots are released to fend for themselves,
and that there are wild flocks breeding and thriving, without talking
about how low a pet bird's chances are of surviving in the wild.
This sounds like an opportunity for a well-written letter to either the editor or the writer of this article, on Mickaboo’s behalf. Here are some talking points: 1.) Most parrots (and most species of parrot-type bird) won’t survive outdoors after having lived in captivity. 2.) It’s illegal to release non-native species of bird to the wild anyway, and it may also be illegal from an animal cruelty perspective (needs research). 3.) The wild flocks do have some problems as non-native species Does anyone feel like taking this on? --VH
