Alternatives to the Ban Meeting

I'm typing on my phone so will be brief- -Teresa of Cavy rescue & Marcy of SaveABunny were both there and very constructive. -Jonathan and I were there repping for Mickaboo and birds -Rick from Animal Co & his hired PR Singer Assoc. and Claudia from Basic Bird in Berkeley and Jaime (used to own SF bird store) and Dana's (Wing Foundation) husband Peter were there as well as Philip, Pam & Sally from SF ACWC and Kat from SFACC. Sellers want to host adoption fairs at their stores, don't feel themselves to be a part of the problem at all. Feel Kaytee would welcome us into their facilities (Pet Central headquartered in Walnut Creek). Teresa suggests an education/certification program for pet buyers like getting a license before buying a pet and stores agreeing to only sell to certified buyers. Rick doesn't want constraint. Marcy standing in solidarity with rescues, won't allow Rick to house her rescue rabbits unless Mickaboo is in agreement. All agree education is key, no one agrees on what that means. Pet sellers are already doing education and see homeless animals as somebody else's problem (my words). Nothing decided, feel like I need a shower. If I had to call it, I'd say Philip & Pam are leaning ban and Sally looking for a compromise. Elizabeth Y www.RescueReport.org

thank you all, especially Jonathan and Elizabeth. Of course the sellers
want no constraints - who does?
I hope we all understand that there is no possibility we can put our birds
into those stores who are selling live birds. Far too many bird stores sell
sick birds, many dosed with just enough medication to disguise their
illness.

Elizabeth and Jonathan, thank you so much for representing us in what was obviously an uncomfortable situation. Elizabeth, I understand your feeling that you need a shower. (I would need a bourbon as well.) headquartered in Walnut Creek). I did some research on this recently, trying to find out more about Kaytee Preferred Bird, which seems to stay under-the-radar. Kaytee is owned by a much larger company, Central Garden and Pet, which is headquartered right here in Walnut Creek. You can see their web page at http://www.central.com/ http://www.central.com/. The attached jpeg, clipped from their 2009 Annual Report, gives a high-level idea of how diversified they are. It'd be really easy to hide a bird breeding or live bird distribution branch in their company where it wouldn't be visible to shareholders or even to many employees. I don't even think that such a comparatively small operation, revenue-wise, would necessarily warrant mention in their 10K if it were generating bad publicity, which it has. So the fact that I don't see a "Kaytee Preferred Birds" mentioned on their web page or in their annual report or 10K is not a surprise to me. However, Central Pet, owned by Central Garden and Pet and on the web at http://www.centralpet.com/ http://www.centralpet.com/, is a distributor of supplies from http://www.centralpet.com/default.asp?pid=9180108 dozens of vendors to pet stores of all sizes. Nowhere on Central Pet's web site do they claim to distribute live animals to pet stores, but nowhere do they deny it either. I am guessing that this is where they keep the function formerly performed by Kaytee Preferred Birds. Hearing Elizabeth say that they would let us look at "Pet Central" reinforces my belief that this is where they do their live bird distribution. I think that we should take them up on their offer and learn as much as possible about what goes on there. --VH

Boy, Rick has some money if he can hire Singer Associates. Either that or Singer is desperate for business. Probably a business decision - could stand to bring the firm a lot of future business.
