Educational media - Using it to our Advantage

I was wondering if any of you were interested in writing articles targeted at external media - I was thinking of *Bird Talk* magazine, for example. Other possibilities might include semi-public newsletters (such as the SPCA's) or similar outlets. Some of the educational articles can also be placed in our own blog or newsletter. The recent discussion about what happens when a bird escapes that really cannot fly very well triggered this chain of thought. But there are many other subjects that would make good discussion topics - including what new bird buyers/adopters should be told. This, of course, is a huge topic, but it could be bitten off in small chunks - like "Can new babies and birds live together amicably?", or "What to Tell Families with Children Who Want to Own a Bird". I am not thinking of scholarly research pieces, or lengthy diatribes, but relatively short, punchy articles that get to the point in clear English and are supported by information in the article itself. For those of you that haven't worked with this particular group before (the Mickaboo Media Advisor Team), it is made up of people interested in supporting media oriented outreach, defending Mickaboo when necessarily, helping on specific initiatives, advising on publicity issues or problems. One or more persons can volunteer to draft a particular article or prepare support research. Then one or more people may volunteer to help with the editing, contact specific media outlets, as appropriate. Generally we try to have the entire group (or as many volunteers as are willing and interested) review the finished piece. The intent is to be supportive and to protect Mickaboo. You raised this issue, Lynne - would you be interested in taking a crack at a first draft on an article about turning birds loose? Does anyone have ideas about where we might place such an article? -- Michelle "Don't believe everything you think."

Maggie Rufo has published several letters to the editor so she could be tapped as an expert resource. Also, there are several Internet-based magazines for and by birdkeepers. These might be a good way to get our feet wet while we’re trying to break into the big time (Bird Talk). Here are a few that I know of off the top of my head: Parrot Ezine Bird Bytes Winged Wisdom (published by Birdsnways) Parrot Chronicles The last one listed has published an article about Mickaboo, but I’m not sure if the author of this article, Carla Thornton, is still writing for the magazine. There’s also Sally Blanchard’s Pet Bird Report, of course, and some animal shelters and HSUS publish newsletters. Regarding writing for Bird Talk, they’re a bit more particular than the smaller ‘zines, as should be expected. They require AP style, proper word count and quality photographs, and they don’t accept unsolicited manuscripts – you have to sell them on an idea first, then the article. It sounds workable, if someone wants to stick with it, and they do pay a few hundred dollars per article. More details at: http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-magazines/bird-talk-2004-03-10-12850.aspx In general, we’d have to agree that Mickaboo wants to partner with an organization before we’d let them publish us. Publicity is always nice, of course but we don’t necessarily want to contribute to a rag that’s mostly about breeding and selling birds. --VH From: media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org [mailto:media-advisors-bounces@mickaboo.org] On Behalf Of Martha Kudlacik Sent: Saturday, June 02, 2012 1:57 PM To: Mickaboo media advisor team Cc: Maria Gray; lynne page Subject: Re: [Media-advisors] Educational media - Using it to our Advantage How about letters to the editor for a start?
