Tracing most calls is easy these days if you have the access and the authority. If the calls were done on a cell phone, their location can be estimated by knowing which tower first picked up the signal from their handset. If the phone is currently on, the provider can triangulate from multiple towers (comparing distances) to get a higher degree of accuracy. The perpetrator’s worst nightmare is if their cell phone is GPS-capable and its tracker is on, even if they are not paying for GPS service. This can find pinpoint their location within a few meters.

I wonder if any reporters are aware of this story. I’m not saying that they should or shouldn’t be – who knows how they would spin it – but they would have inside contacts in the police department and elsewhere that might help to get this researched.
