I'm so glad you were at today's meeting - thank you for making time to be there.
And I'm so glad that we have identified a source of confusion when we Mickaboo and parrot folks speak of "parrots" as contrasted to when SFACC speaks of parrots ala "20 parrots taken into SFACC in 2009" (and "51 parakeets" and "2 budgerigars") that can be clarified.
In the bird world, hookbills (budgies=parakeets, cockatiels, ringnecks, lovebirds, conures, amazons, eclectus, pionus, poicephalus, cockatoos, macaws, greys, etc.) are all parrots. Finches and canaries are considered softbills (as are doves and pigeons).
I'm sure Mickaboo could help to review and make suggestions regarding the way "parrots" and other birds are counted at SFACC.
Also- I've noticed when at SFACC that birds aren't always correctly identified on their kennel cards (chukars labeled as quail, pigeons as doves and vice a versa, an amazon labeled as a conure, etc). Perhaps some system can be created to ID birds more exactly. I bet we could figure out a way to help with that (by recommending a reference book or website or creating a picture collage of frequently received birds or ??).
It feels important to me! (And I've cc'd Mickaboo leaders because I think it is important to them too.)
