For what it's worth, I thought the Oasis explanation was pretty good, in that the magazine is attempting to get people involved with their pet birds' health and welfare, and that keeps the birds out of the rescues.

Manhattan Bird Club has some good members, but it is also notorious for supporting gross exaggerations and partial-truths and guilt-by-association.  It's like saying, "If you've visited Germany, you must be a Nazi."  In this case, because she "likes" a magazine she supports pet-sales?  Unless it's pointed out to me, I can't see where they gleened that info.
 
Actually, I'm annoyed enough that I'm going to write Sybil and ask her.
