California Humane Lobby Day this year will be on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. This is a free, all-day event; it begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 4:00 PM. A number of us attended it last year and the year before. Some of us will be participating again this year. Here's a description of the event:
"The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA invite our members, supporters, and other animal advocates to participate in the California Humane Lobby Day in Sacramento, where you'll make a tremendous difference for animals.
This is an exciting opportunity to meet directly with your elected officials and their staff about legislation that will significantly impact animals. There will be a briefing with tips for lobbying, and an overview of pending animal legislation that will prepare you to meet your elected officials and advocate for animals."
The event organizers require that we sign up for it, because they need to determine who the Assemblymember and State Senator for each participant is; they then make appointments with our legislators for us to visit them in their offices in the State Capitol in the afternoon and talk to them regarding upcoming animal-related bills.
To sign up for Humane Lobby Day, go to
http://action.humanesociety.org/site/Calendar/1115150951?view=Detail&id=103922 and click the "Sign me up" button.
April 4 is their tentative deadline for people to sign up. Note that there may be a limited number of spots available, so sign up before all the spots are taken. In 2009, sign-ups were closed two days BEFORE the announced deadline because all the spots were taken. If you are unsure about whether you can attend this event, go ahead and sign up for it. You can easily cancel later. After you sign up, the organizers will send you further details about the event. The Humane Society provides a Facebook group page to facilitate carpooling (you post a message in the "Discussion" area of the page).
