I don't have the bandwidth to pursue this but I definitely think Mickaboo should reach out to the makers of this film (see below) and ask them to partner with Mickaboo (and possibly other rescues/habitat conservancies) to speak on behalf of the many already-captive parrots languishing and in need of care and adopters as well as those losing their homes and babies and habitats at a heartbreaking rate. I'd bet money that they are already partnering with somebody and perhaps we can join in. And I think a viewing/benefit at The Blue Macaw would be brilliant. Having an annual report is a good idea in any case. If she cant do this I am guessing that there are at least a few others who could do the writing and consult with Patricia for distribution ideas. The way that I see it, even if not many media outlets run the story, we can still get a LOT of publicity by posting the press release on our own Web page and linking to it prominently. I have been following this . . . stuff about James Spaid and one of the topics that is currently going around with his livejournal coterie is how Mickaboo rarely provides medical care, even to very needy birds. As a few of us have learned, engaging that group directly to rebut their claims is like mud-wrestling with a pig (you get covered in slop and the pig enjoys himself). Instead, I think that it would be a better idea to post our results for 2010 in a very visible place so that people could clearly see the gap between their perceptions and our reality. Hello- Some fellow rescuers at the SF Homeless Animal Coalition recommended this web group as a good venue for outreach and I wanted to in turn pass it along to y'all. I think it would be a great place for Mickaboo to post upcoming bird care classes, adoption events, Ebay sales, recruit for PAs, etc. I will be using it to publicize MickaCoo's birds, needs and events. I also think it is helpful to get the pet bird over-population crisis issue out in front of more animal advocates. Plaza Farmersâ market manager Christine Adams and live poultry vendor Raymond Young to give them their final warning to comply with health laws, or have their permits revoked. Weâve been since documenting and reporting flagrant and defiant continued, while patiently waiting for the Health Dept. to proceed with enforcement. Last night, KRON 4 TVâs Stanley Roberts ran a news story about violations of the âno live animals in the marketâ law, which should put more pressure on the Health Dept. I'm hoping you'll forward this email as widely as possible to all your fellow animal lovers. In case you can't access the flyer that I have attached, here is Whiskers' information: Whiskers was an upstanding member of Greg's feral cat colony until a few months ago, when he noticed that the poor little guy had gone blind -- so of course he had to bring him inside where he would be safe and warm. Whiskers is about 8 years old, black, neutered, vaccinated and FIV/Felv negative. He has been to the vet a few times and, after dental surgery (his teeth were very bad and had to be removed), he has been declared to be in good health. He may have some sight, but we can't be sure about that. He eats well and uses the litterbox like a gentleman! There were never any signs that he had any problems getting along with the other cats in the colony, so he would probably do fine in a new home with other cats, as long as they're not aggressive (obviously he is at a disadvantage there). He is safe and warm and well-fed in San Francisco, but Greg feels he cannot give him the attention or accommodations he should have. For now, he is "warehoused" in Greg's bathroom, just sitting, bored. Being a former feral kitty, he does not seem to crave petting, but he is sweet-natured and tolerates it. This is a sad situation, but I'm hoping there are people out there who might be able to help. There are two feral cats in the Excelsior District of San Francisco who, for about five years, have been fed every day by a very kind woman who has a home there. They wait to be fed on her front porch. Sadly, she is in the last stages of cancer, and probably has just weeks, maybe even days, to live. Yesterday she said that she simply doesn't have the strength to feed them any more, so a neighbor has temporarily stepped in to help, but she cannot take the cats in, and none of the other neighbors have offered to help feed or take care of the cats. The house will be sold after her death and the cats will have nowhere to go. Can YOU help these two kitties? We are desperately looking for a cat-friendly person willing to provide a backyard for the two cats to live out their lives. These cats were trapped, neutered or spayed and vaccinated years ago. The only option available for them is to find them a new backyard "home"; otherwise they will be euthanized, as we simply cannot leave them out there to starve. That's where YOU come in! If you have a backyard and are willing to give these cats a safe place to be, and fresh food and water every day, we will be happy to guide you through the process of helping a feral-in-need accept your back yard as home. You give them a safe place to live and some food and water, and they gratefully watch over your yard and provide the beauty of a feline form at rest and at play. If you love cats but are allergic to them, or don't want cat fur around your house, this is a purrfect solution! Please consider extending a helping hand to these two San Francisco feral cats!
