Hi! I know it just seems like yesterday that we talked about foster homes for birds. So since we talked 5 new amazons have come in and another is expected this coming Wednesday. We didn't have any of the right sized caging but thanks to Bill Kennedy for kicking off a cage campaign and thanks to many of you for kicking some money right back at him, today he is going to buy some cages. My garage seems to have a revolving door - as soon as I put one amazon in a foster home and scrub the cage there is another occupant waiting to come in. And the garage was supposed to be a stop gap measure. I don't want our birds in a garage. For the most part these are really sweet birds that have been subjected to a lot of neglect, poor diet, no baths or medical care, no grooming, and they come in as dismal little sacks of dull feathers. In some instances the birds have experienced terrible treatment at the hands of the individuals who were responsible for their care taking and the birds have learned to react with fear and anger. But almost overnight with a clean cage in a warm safe environment, some food and fresh water, a couple toys, some mellow music and a little interaction you can see a flicker of life and energy begin to surface. To offer the bare necessities to these little wild spirits is so simple. And the gift you get back is to see physical and mental renewal in a creature who has spend untold hours sitting in a bad space waiting.
