update 5/26/2007: The last time I wrote I was moving into some new digs to be part of a social experiment to teach "Jimmy" about other big birds. Jimmy used to be a mess of anger and fear but after a year or so in his special foster home he has turned the corner. So I was volunteered to be a guest in the same home because the thinking was that another big aggressive male Double Yellow Head Amazon and Jimmy might learn a thing or two from each other. Our introduction was what you might expect - lots of flashing eyes, flared tails, flipping wings and posturing. In a few days the foster mom said she observed us eating at the same time, preening at the same time, and really checking out the other guy. She started working with me on "clicker" training too and I showed her how smart I am. She also observed that I was doing a whole different style of posturing, which might just mean that I thought Jimmy was a "hunk" and that I might be a big aggressive female Double Yellow Head. She also says that underneath all my bravura, there is a sweet bird who has just had a really bad time with humans. So I guess Jimmy and I don't have a future together, but maybe you and I might. Read up on clicker training and contact my coordinator. I'll be waiting . . .

update 5/6/2007: Just wanted you to know that I have moved and am now part of a "socialization" and "desensitizing" program for Jimmy, another aggressive Double Yellow Head Amazon. If you read Jimmy's story you'll know he is being fostered by an avian behaviorist, and she has determined that a big part of his problem is that he is afraid of other birds. She suggested I might be a guest in her home for a while to see if Jimmy and I could help each other. Maybe I could see how he has learned to be calm and trusting with his human and maybe he would learn to be around another big bird. All of this behind the scenes work is to smooth the rough edges off our behaviors that a bad life has given us and help us become more adoptable. I know Jimmy and I both really want to be in a home that loves us but we have to know our Ps and Qs. If there is someone out there who just loves Double Yellow Heads, check with our coordinator. We are both big and gorgeous and looking for a dedicated teacher to help us learn our manners. ************************** Hello my name is Peppie! I'm a Double Yellow Head Amazon about 25 years old. When a Mickaboo volunteer came to pick me up the wind was definitely beneath my wings. My owners believed in lots of fresh air so day in and day out I sat on a porch where the northwesterlies, southeasterlies, artic blasts and any other kind of wind just hit me with full force. My owners wheeled me in at night but decided to get rid of me because I was a really mean, aggressive, bitey bird. My foster dad doesn't think I'm mean at all - just probably traumatized by the winds and negative feelings from my former owners. Now I am enjoying a big clean cage in a warm house and I can say I didn't think life could be so good. You have to figure I'm a hardy fellow to have survived the elements for many years and my former owner said I never went to a vet. I ate seeds, fruits and peanuts but am now learning there are a lot of other things on the parrot food pyramid that taste great. My foster dad says I need to be on a diet because I am a bit more than portly - so much more that I am in a large macaw cage and couldn't squeeze through the bars if I tried. I say I had to have that extra reserve to brave the wind. If you have made a New Year's resolution to lose weight (or NOT) give my coordinator a contact. We might get in shape together . . . or NOT.
