JJ is a 13 year old handsome normal grey cockatiel. His owner contacted Mickaboo because she believed JJ had a broken wing and could not afford vet care. JJ's wing was severely plucked and the skin yellow.
JJ was immediately taken to an avian vet where it was determined that JJ's wing was not broken. Even worse. JJ had a tumor. On April 22, 08, JJ had partial wing amputation surgery. The end of the wing up to the 'wrist' (the end of the wing that the primary feathers attach to) was removed. This means that JJ still has the part of the wing closest to the body (where the secondary feathers attach to) which means he has a wing to stretch out and preen, enabling him to balance.
JJ has been making an excellent recovery but yet again we received bad news. He has tumors in multiple places in his body indicating that the cancer began somewhere in his little body and spread to his wing. It is highly unlikely that any combination of medications will cure JJ's Lymphosarcoma. He has been moved into hospice care where the goal at this point is comfort and quality of life for JJ.
The good news is that JJ has been adopted by a truly wonderful and caring Mickaboo volunteer. She will try holistic cancer medication in addition to the traditional ones he is already on. With love anything is possible; JJ could be with us for days or years. Thanks to Mickaboo's intervention, the help of a generous sponsor and a wonderful new adoptive home, JJ has the best chance at living out the rest of his life in the most peaceful, comfortable way possible.
