UPDATE 4/2/05: Paco's sad story had a very sad end. He ate the luggage lock that was being used to secure his cage. The sharp pieces of metal did too much internal damage to save him. UPDATE 9/4/04: Hello! Here I am again! I'm still looking for a permanent home, but it shouldn't be with other male cockatoos. I don't like those guys and I can be very aggressive. UPDATE 11/12/2003: Paco now eats pellets and has begun to come out of his shell. In addition to talking up a storm, he also whistles and blows kisses. The doctor has decided not to go with surgery but to manage his condition with hormone treatments and permanent stay sutures to keep him from prolapsing. This is something that he may have to live with for the rest of his life but with behavior modification, that could change. He is still a little nesty but his foster mom is working on that. He basically needs to learn how to be a bird and play rather than be a cuddle machine! Hi, my name is Paco, and Iím a male umbrella cockatoo. I have a bit of a sad story to tell. You see, my owner tried her best to take care of me, but she didn't know what to feed me. She gave me wild bird seed and kept me in a garage with a bunch of other animals, like dogs and cats and a few other birds. Then she passed away and no one knew but us animals. We ran out of food and water, and just when I thought that the end was near, I was saved. My mom's family called Mickaboo and they came and got me and discovered that I had something called a cloacal prolapse. My mom was always having the doctor come out and fix that. What it basically means is that my hormones are a little too much for me to handle and I am a little nesty. I might have to have surgery to correct that, but I also have to learn how to just be a bird and have fun! I really like my new foster mom, and I get on top of my cage and dance for her and sing (she calls it screeching but it's really just my "happy noises"). I like to take showers with my foster mom and try whatever food she's eating. I talk a lot and am always telling my foster mom what a good boy I am. Iím also very cuddly, but my foster mom doesn't allow me to cuddle too much because of the "hormone" thing. I donít like my pellets and veggies at the moment, but she is determined to make me learn to love them.
