The old Irish saying "Patience can conquer destiny" is a perfect fit for Jimmy, a special needs Amazon and our featured bird of the month. Jimmy has been with Mickaboo for a year - getting healthy, socialized, and learning to trust humans. His foster mom is a bird behaviorist who has done wonders with him, but he will always be special and different. He can't tell us his whole life's story but what we know of his 15+ years is grim. He lived in a cage meant for a cockatiel and was fed only seed. Then he was raffled off like a frozen turkey for a $1 a ticket at a bird show. He has white specks on the corneas of both eyes, which are cholesterol deposits from years of a fatty diet. He has a crooked toe from an old injury, and was a non-stop screamer and aggressive lunger. In the past year he has become very comfortable inside or outside of a good sized cage. He has learned to LOVE fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, scrambled eggs, pasta and more. He adores showers and is clean, shiny, in good feather and has all the looks of good health. He enjoys coming out of his cage, exploring the floor, sofa and table top - just walking around and checking things out. Then he climbs up onto the back of the couch for a little siesta while his foster mom reads. Though he still has some trust issues with humans he also craves human attention. Jimmy still has some underlying anxiety and nervousness which causes him to bite if startled or uncertain. He feel insecure when left alone in a room, and yells, but can be reassured by frequent calls to him from his caretaker "I'm OK, you're OK". He also knows when he is going to be left alone in the house, even before his humans are out the door and becomes very quiet and says "bu-bu-bye". He waits patiently for their return. Jimmy is very smart and has learned several tricks and the names of colors. He can put objects in a bowl, shake hands, knock down mini bowling pins, play basketball, and is able to distinguish between different colored objects. He needs someone to continue to teach him new things. He adapted well to new experiences with his foster parents including flying in a private plane and camping in a travel trailer with his parents, some bunnies and several other birds. He does not entertain himself but can't resist joining in the fun when his companion starts playing with his toys. Jimmy will do best as an only bird. He seems to prefer a quiet home without other avian competition. He is a stodgy old perch potato who likes to have one or more people in the room with him, just reading, eating, or some other calm quiet activity. Jimmy really wants and so deserves a lifetime companion or family he can call his own. He has come so far in such a short time it is truly wonderful and amazing. Jimmy is a resilient little guy who brought nothing but trouble in his baggage and now has a whole new bag of tricks.
