update 6/3/2007: Hey there! Life is passing me by. I'm sitting here in the dining room of my foster home next to a room full of humongous big birds waiting for someone with a hooded sweatshirt to come visit. I'll know we are meant to be if you wear the sweatshirt with the hood in front because I LOVE to snuggle and hide in the hood. I'm a very stylish feathered "hood ornament" :-) . Even though I'm living with the stress of all these noisy big birds and the vacuum cleaners, including Mr. Beeps the roomba robot cleaner which I hate, my health seems to be fine. In the last six months I've only had to use my medicated breathing about 4 times. I am a terrific eater and finally after 20+ years have learned to play a bit with toys. I love to sit on my person's shoulder and help with computer work or watching TV. I am little and fast so if you have big furry four footed animals around you'd have to be VERY CAREFUL if you also had me! But if you have a hooded sweatshirt that could use a cute little green bird rustling around in side, contact the coordinator . . 12/31/06: Happy New Year from your little bird buddy, Buddy! You may remember I have some breathing problems and an enlarged heart. I am kind of like a little kid with asthma. I just have to take it easy - no high levels of activity or stress for me. I am feeling better enough to be taken off regular medication and to start looking for a new home. But from time to time my breathing sounds a little ragged so my mom puts me in the nebulizer for about twenty minutes and I get better quickly. I take my treatment and then want mom to hold me for a while, give some head and chin scritches, and maybe carry me around on her shoulder just so I feel safe. My doctor says because I lived in an environment with really bad air for a long time, I'm just going to have this little problem. If you live a wild and crazy lifestyle I am not the bird for you. But if you like all the comforts of a peaceful home, I bet you and I could have a wonderful time together. 12/18/06. I wanted to let you know how I'm doing. You may remember I was feeling punky and sick. My vet and my foster mom have worked really hard to fix all my problems and my spunky (better than punky) little personality is back. Because I lived for many years with very bad air quality, I will always have compromised lungs and an enlarged heart. My vet said if I am kept free of infections, in a very clean and low stress environment, I could probably be a wonderful companion for a long time. Here is what my foster mom has learned about me: I know how to step up. I will bow my head for scritches. I am so used to going into the nebulizer (a special setup to help my breathing) that as soon as I get close I just jump right in and wait for the medicated air to start. I eat a few pellets, love Avicakes and little almonds in the shell. I've been getting lots of new soft foods - scrambled eggs, veggies, fruit and am willing to taste just about everything. I don't play with toys but maybe I just need someone to show me how. Today, I saw another bird on my mom's shoulder and just went nuts. I was so excited and happy, whistling, screetching, flapping and it was obvious how lonely I've been. So I think I'd be happiest if I could be in a family with a few other small to medium size birds. I am very small, don't make much mess or noise, so maybe you can find a place in your home and your life for me - I'll be your l'il Buddy. Hi I'm Buddy, kind of a funny name for a girl but I'm definitely a girl. My owner bought me in 1987, which makes me at least 19 years old and I've laid eggs so no doubt about my gender. Nice things come in small packages I've heard. I am the smallest of amazons, a White Front, and tiny compared to those big old Blue Fronts and Double Yellow Heads. My species is somewhat shy and pretty quiet. We generally don't talk but can mimic noises very well. When Mickaboo picked me up, I wasn't feeling good and was having a hard time breathing. So away I went on a rainy Sunday afternoon to see the bird doctor. By the time you read this I'll probably be in my new foster home - living the good life because that's what Mickaboo foster homes are all about - helping us all get better, eating good food, playing with toys, enjoying big clean cages, and getting ready to meet people who might like to hold a tiny amazon in their hand and in their heart. Wait for me, I'll be well soon and maybe we can share the holidays together . . Notice: Due to the sometimes difficult nature of amazons, Mickaboo prefers that amazons not be a households' first parrot.
