Update 3/19/06: Mirasol is doing great! She is really fitting well into our family. She loves coming out of her cage every day. As a matter of fact, she is very vocal about when she wants something---usually in the morning she demands to come out and "hang out" on the kitchen table while my wife and I drink our coffee and read the paper. Just this morning we opened her door and she came out of the cage on her own and flew over to the table (first time-we were very happy) She hasn't quite learned to "step up" yet but she is close. I think she is still nervous about a human hand based on her past experiences with injections and such. However, she is making progress, and we can touch her and get very close to her and she is pretty relaxed. She is very gentle and never bites. We love her very much. UPDATE 1/29/06: After spending 4 months recuperating and regaining my strength, I'm off to a new forever home with a couple in San Diego. They don't have any other birds right now, so I'll be the star of the show. Of course, they do have 3 dogs, but that's probably because they work with a dog rescue group. They bought a beautiful, big, brand new cage just for me--so now I can really spread my wings! Mickaboo saved my life, no doubt about it. I'm Marisol (Mar-ee-sol), a lovely lutino cockatiel living in San Diego. I was dying in San Diego when a woman picked me up from her lawn. I was too weak to fly away. She took me to a shelter but soon regretted that and came back for me so I could be surrendered to Mickaboo. Good thing, because I was getting no veterinary care. It turned out I had an infected puncture wound in my left wing, causing me to limp, and I was severely underweight. After some x-rays, fluids and a week of antibiotic treatment, I am a new bird. To go with my new life, I was given my new name meaning sea and sun. I've been eating as much as a small bird can hold, I'm no longer limp, and I'm in perfect feather. All I need now is a person to spend time with me to teach me the social graces. I'm not afraid of people but I am wary of hands coming toward me. Being a cockatiel, I'm curious about my world and that includes the humans I see. I'm a fairly quiet bird though I do chirp some. (Most of my vocalizing has been done when my foster mom is away but her African Grey has "ratted me out" by imitating my chirps.) Please give this Southern California girl a chance to make the most of my new life. Notice: Cockatiels are flock animals, and most of them are much happier when they live with at least one other cockatiel! Because of this, unless a household currently includes another cockatiel, Mickaboo usually requires that a minimum of two cockatiels be adopted. Print this page |
