This beautiful small Amazon parrot traveled a rough road to find Mickaboo. His owner of approximately 30 years died alone, leaving his beloved companion bird locked in a cage without food or water. A neighbor finally noticed the elderly man hadn't been seen for a while and contacted the authorities. This gentle bird was rescued with almost no time left to live and then had the misfortune to go to an animal shelter that didn't know much about birds. The shelter workers labeled him "aggressive"---the farthest thing from the truth about him---and he was scheduled to be euthanized. Fortunately a Mickaboo volunteer, who sleuths around local shelters, learned about him and bailed him out--she even became his foster Mom! With good care, Korbel began to shine and show that he had known kindness in the past. Given the 30 previous years of his life, remarkably Korbel was very at home in a foster family with three young, active kids. He remained quiet and low key, watching wild birds feeding outside his window. He began to mumble and whistle to himself and took opportunities to climb out of his cage and look around. He loved bath times - spray baths and then washing his face in his own water dish! He initially showed interest in only a few foods (apple, peanuts) but learned to eat pellets and to taste a few other things. He appreciated treats and took them gently. A potential adoptive family looking for a special bird indicated an interest in meeting Korbel and a match was made. Korbel's new Dad said he was too classy to be named for cheap champagne so his name was changed to Korrie or Mr. Bell, if you please! Somehow Korrie knew he was home and although he remained sweet, calm and gentle, he livened up a bit. He has become flirtatious, chatty and eager to share a snack from the kitchen. He sticks to a limited but healthy menu. Korrie was initially hand shy and did not seek scritches or other affection. One day he fell off his perch, and his Mom picked him up and during this retrieval was able to rub his head. Since then he has responded well to conservative touches. Korrie figured out a way to get his head scratched on his own especially when new pinfeathers were itchy. He would chew a small manzanita piece into a sharp point and use this to scratch his own head. He has even been seen using a pinfeather to scratch with too. The new family said in their latest report "Korrie has become a very special member of our family and we couldn't be happier. Needless to say we love him very much!" Notice: Due to the sometimes difficult nature of amazons, Mickaboo prefers that amazons not be a households' first parrot.
