Update: Cassandra was taken directly from a park in San Francisco to an avian vet who has treated quite a few of the flock members suffering from the neurological disease. At first we thought she wouldn't survive the night, then she started to improve and we thought she'd be fine, but then she quickly deteriorated again and finally the decision was made to put her out of her misery. A necropsy was done and the results showed that, like other members of the flock that did not live despite our best efforts, she had parasitic trails in her brain. She was with us only a short time, but she touched our hearts, and while we wished she could have lived to go into a loving forever-home with a Mickaboo family, her death was not in vain. Every necropsy gives us a little more understanding of this illness so we can better help the birds that will come to us down the line.
I am one of the famed "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" but I'm now a Mickaboo bird because I have come down with the neurological illness that affects some members of the flock. I was found in San Francisco, unable to perch or fly and very very ill. A wonderful Mickaboo volunteer rushed out to rescue me and take me to a vet. For a while everyone thought I wasn't going to survive, but I pulled through and am now stable. I'm working on getting past the clumsiness that comes with this illness. Maybe you'd like to help a minor celebrity back to her feet?
