On July 11, MickaCoo received a call from Berkeley Animal Care Services about a white "dove" taken into the shelter. The dove turned out to be a young king pigeon, whom I named Miki (from the Inuit word for "little") when I arrived to pick him up. He was a sweet but forlorn-looking bird who weighed next to nothing. I took him straight to Dr. Rupiper's office in Petaluma, talking gently to him and playing soft music on the long ride. At the vet's office, he was determined to be emaciated and suffering from a bad case of trichomoniasis as well as other opportunistic bacterial infections. Thanks to MickaCoo, Dr. R was able to provide Miki with IV fluids and tube feeding, and we started him on antibiotics. However, he was just too weakened by illness and stress to keep up the fight, and he passed away within a couple of hours of arriving home with me. In those last couple of hours, he was kept safe and quiet, resting on a heating pad and blanket, and clearly appreciating the mirror he was given for company and comfort. He died very peacefully and was buried on a hillside overlooking a lovely valley, with wild band-tailed pigeons in attendance. Miki was loved. Print this page |
