Hi, I'm Major! I have a kind of mysterious history. I had several elderly caregivers who, in turn, could no longer take care of me, and I ended up at a shelter, not feeling too well. Mickaboo made sure that I got the veterinary care that I needed and now, I'm finally feeling good again. Although, I became a little wary of people hands while I was being medicated, even though I know deep down that it was for my own good. I am a tame bird and I like being around people. My foster mom says I'm a really good little boy! I'm learning about healthy foods and enriching toys in foster care too, and I am slowly expanding my tastes with both of these. My foster mom successfully weaned me off of Nutricakes, and I am now eating Zupreem as well as Harrisons pellets. She even finally figured out my favorite foods, APPLES and PINE NUTS! But she calls those "treats" so I don't get them often. But I'm sure happy when I do. Sometimes I step up, but I'm a little shy... working on being more adventurous though. I do have this really cute habit of wagging my tail feathers when I gets settled! I also like sitting on shoulders and will visit with my foster mom from there. When my foster mom isn't paying attention to me I will call out to her to see what she is doing -- but I also make quieter, gentler kissing sounds. She's giving me positive reinforcement when I make the quieter vocalizations to help me learn that they are preferable to the loud ones. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a screamer, but we Nandays are pretty loud by nature. As for my species, I am a Nanday conure, also known as the black hooded parakeet, and our scientific name is Nandayus nenday. There's some debate among taxonomists about whether we Nandays should be categorized with the Aratinga conures like the Jenday and Sun instead of having our own monotypic genus. I don't care too much about what they call me because I already know what I am: a smart, smallish green, blue and black parrot with a big voice and big-bird attitude. I would love a forever home that I can live in for the rest of my life and never had to move again! Can I be your forever bird? Print this page |
