UPDATE 8/8/06: I have been through the fire and like a phoenix, I have risen to the dawn of a bright new day! I have a new name, Kyeema, to go with my new life. Kyeema means "Of the Dawn" in Australian-Aboriginal. I am loving life these days! I even have a cockatiel buddy, Yerba Birda (aka Frances), another Mickaboo adoptee. My new mom has worked hard on my cage set up and I can now move around easily with my remaining leg. In the evenings, I am out and about on the play gyms or hanging out with mom. I have fun following Yerba Birda around and getting into mischief with him, like chewing up mom's books and papers! I enjoy eating lots of foods; I've taught Yerba to eat lots of good healthy foods that he wouldn't touch before. We're a good team! I love to cuddle and snuggle with mom. She'll nestle me against her body so I can hunker down and not worry about having to balance. She scritches my head feathers for me while I close my eyes in pure pleasure. I had things pretty rough there for a while. The good folks at Mickaboo helped me recover from my injury and found me a home where I am loved and allowed to live life to the fullest.
UPDATE 2/28/06: In a very sad development, the bone in Cheeky's leg became infected and her leg had to be amputated. She has recovered very quickly, however, the infection is gone, and Cheeky is feeling very much better. She still scrambles up the front of the nearest person to get to their shoulder, and she hops from shoulder to shoulder to find the best spot. She can perch well and she's learning how to maneuver around her new, bigger cage. With all of the pain and misery she's had to experience, Cheeky is still a cuddle-bird -- affectionate, gentle, sweet-natured."
Hello, everyone. My name is Cheeky, probably because (like all cockatiels) that's the sound I make when I'm just commenting on events (cheek!). You may have heard other birds referred to as being a "handful", but as you can see from one of my pictures -- I really am! I am a very gentle, affectionate, sweet-natured girl cockatiel that needs lots of time and attention. I had a terrible accident that burned one of my legs, and it's been a very unpleasant treatment and recuperation period, but as you can see, things are looking up. I can use the injured leg a little bit, and I'm getting better all the time. The other picture (where I'm not being a handful) shows me with a beakful of carrot, which I'm stealing from my neighbors' veggie dish -- I had to go foraging on my own because my foster mom wasn't quick enough to give me my own veggies. I am interested in other cockatiels, but my most favorite thing in the world is sitting on someone's shoulder being skritched. Life just doesn't get any better than that. Every time my cage is opened, I run up the front of the nearest person to get on their shoulder. And I'm not reluctant to hop from shoulder to shoulder, looking for the best spot. I'm going to be looking for a new home pretty soon, so keep an eye on me -- not to be immodest, but they don't come any sweeter than me! Story posted on: February 10, 2006

Notice: Cockatiels are flock animals, and most of them are much happier when they live with at least one other cockatiel! Because of this, unless a household currently includes another cockatiel, Mickaboo usually requires that a minimum of two cockatiels be adopted.
