5/21/06: Very sadly, one of Carmen's Dads recently died. Because of all the disruptions associated with his passing, Carmen is back with Mickaboo.
UPDATE 1/4/2004: Here's a report from Carmen's new Dads! "It's been a little over two months since Carmen, a charming, funny, and extremely intelligent three year old Blue & Gold Macaw joined our family and she's been the center of attention ever since. Carmen?s foster Mom cautioned that it might take several days for Carmen to settle in, so you can imagine our surprise when she was ready to come out of her house within minutes of getting home, and it wasn't much longer before she was up to the same games and tricks that we witnessed when visiting her foster home. My favorite thing about Carmen is that she is very thoughtful about when and who she gives her most special affectionate actions to. When we are given such a gift we know we have done something very pleasing for Carmen. On the other hand, she has a terrific sense of humor, and when performing a trick or playing she will let out a big laugh (really!) Her favorite thing to do is throw her toys in the floor and give you the "eye" until you pick them up for her. Then of course she starts the game over. I remember cuddling her close to my chest when something spooked her (Macaws are rather jumpy) a while back, and I found myself asking her if she had any idea how much joy she has brought into our lives, and I hope that we can fulfill that need for her. I would encourage anyone interested in adopting a feathered companion - they come in every shape, size, and color - to take advantage of the resources offered by Mickaboo. Large birds can be as demanding as a young child, which is one reason we are so happy with Carmen. I found that the literature I read about Macaws was pretty much right on target, but each bird is unique - Macaw's are listed as being among the loudest parrots, and Carmen can peel the wallpaper, but it has been surprising to us that she hardly ever does so. She "calls" in a normal tone and in human language, and she will scold you with a snort if the TV is too loud. Oh, she loves Sesame Street and other children's shows, and her vocabulary, which is extensive, is continually expanding. Thanks Mickaboo, and thanks Carmen! We love you."
UPDATE 9/24/03: Carmen's foster mom reports that Carmen likes to eat anything and everything. She has also blossomed into a very playful bird and absolutely loves men. She is also an attention hog and likes to spend as much time out of the cage as she can get. Her foster mom recommends that she have at least three hours a day out time. She is not interested in other birds---she wants nothing to do with the other blue and gold that she lives with, she only wants to be with people. We are hoping to find a home for her where she can be the only bird or one of very few so that she can be the shining star!
What's big and sweet and partly yellow? No, not a banana split--it's me! I'm Carmen, a blue and gold macaw. (Maybe my name should be Carmine. Nobody but me knows whether I'm a he or she.) My family bought me from a pet store about 2 1/2 years ago, so I'm about 3 years old. For those years, I've had a good home with a nice big cage (it comes with me), regular vet care, and a good diet of pellets and fresh food. Veggies and soybeans are some of my favorites. But my mom is spending more time with her human son now and feels she doesn't have enough time for me. Sometimes I felt that way, too, so I yelled for her attention. And like any self-respecting big macaw I can scream loud enough to melt your brain. But if you have time for me, I'll melt your heart by letting you cuddle me and scratch my head. (I?ve never bitten anybody, but you must respect the size and strength of my beak.) I will step up and greet you with a cheery "hello" or "hi, baby." So if you have room in your home for me and the "furniture" I need, room in your life for a rather demanding parrot, and room in your heart for an affectionate friend, I may be the treat for you.
