10/18/06 From Pumpkin's foster Mom: "I miss Pumpkin. I miss the way she'd wake me up most mornings with the loudest, most annoying, cockatiel call I've ever heard. The way she'd leap from anywhere in order to be with me. How every time I'd leave the room she'd call me relentlessly. How she drove me from my room at times I wanted to be in there because she was so freaking loud. The way she'd sometimes chastise me for trying to pet her and then other times would lay her head into my palm with her eyes closed while I scritched her for the longest time. I miss laughing at the way she would keep trying to play with my earrings. Taking her to the bird class and having everyone laugh as she was all over the place- on me, leaping over to be on Michelle's shoulder when she didn't even know her, introducing herself to the lovely male tiel Tiger Tiger. I miss seeing the progress she was making with the foraging toys. Going from not having a clue to do without her food coming from her bowl, to running from toy to toy wondering which one I put it in. Gradually figuring out the acrylic puzzle maze to the point of amazing me, because I didn't think a cockatiel could learn to do it. I miss watching her pull feathers out of Jezebel's head just because she wanted her to move over, and telling her what a "bad birdy" she was for doing it with a smile upon my face. I miss holding her warm body with her skin against mine. Laughing at her silly crest that looks more like a crown then a crest. Watching in amazement as food slowly entered her crop on the right side, then leveled out, and gradually left her crop through the course of the day. I miss watching her wings grow in ever so slowly and waiting for the day when she could fly around the room. And I miss dreaming about the person who would one day meet her and see her like I saw her and take her home. I miss her so much." 4/6/06: "Pumpkin was a skinny little girl when she came to her foster home in December. Since then she has filled out quite nicely. Although she still plucks, especially down the front of her, she now has some feathers growing in at the top of her back and wings. She is so very gentle and loveable and still has her squeaky little voice, but doesn't back into corners scared anymore. Pumpkin just loves her vegetables and eats peas and corn and fresh broccoli. She doesn't turn her ceres up at anything! Bath time is still a treat for her, culminating in cuddle time of being wrapped up in a hand towel and sitting on Mom drying with something warm and light either draped over or under her while she naps." I'm Pumpkin, an adorable little cockatiel. Don't think of a scary jack o'lantern, but a pumpkin pie because I'm warm and sweet. Even my call is little and cute. If I'm frightened, I run to a corner of my cage and squeak to sound as impressive as I can, but I don't really fool anybody. I just love to be wrapped up and snuggled against a person's chest--right under the chin. I was surrendered at an animal shelter by someone who said I came from an aviary with 5 other cockatiels. Maybe I was scared there and that led to my plucking. Since I have been a treasured foster bird, I have shown no signs of itching or plucking. My beak is for eating now and I do a great job of it. I love several kinds of pellets, Avicakes and Nutriberries, freeze-dried veggies, and the occasional bit of apple. My favorite toys are Shredders and cuttlebones. For exercise, I also climb all over my cage. I enjoy warm baths in the sink as well as soft sprays. The best part is being cuddled in a towel and gently rubbed dry, with a few head scritches for good measure. You see, I am definitely a people bird. If you can provide me a loving, calm home with plenty of "us time," I will reward you tenfold. Puppies are okay, but in my world happiness is a warm Pumpkin!
