UPDATE: Turns out Wendell is a Wendy and she is available with her mate, Johnny Pijj, at Andy's Pet Shop. Hello there. I'm Wendell and they tell me I'm quite a clever pigeon. You see, I was kept standing on a wire-bottom cage for so long that my feet became cut and infected. Well, my person wasn't helping me so I had to set off on my own and I went to the Bay Area Bird Hospital and introduced myself. They were a little surprised because I guess birds don't usually arrive unaccompanied but what choice did I have? Luckily they kindly fit me into their schedule and have been caring for me ever since. My condition, called "bumble foot" has been treated and is almost healed. Now I need a new home. One with proper flooring for a pigeon- that bumble foot hurt! So, if you'd like to make friends with a smart, independent king pigeon named Wendell, that's me! Here's what Wendell's friends at the Bay Area Bird Hospital say about him- "He's SUCH a wonderful, inquisitive, and social bird. He loves talking with us, and walking around the hospital. I just really want him to have the best home ever, where he will get lots of attention. :) Also, his feet are healing well and he should need minimal follow-up, which the hospital will cover." And here's an update from the staff at BABH: "Wendell is doing well, just got his last bandage off today & although his left foot isn't as perfect looking as his right, he doesn't appear to be in any pain & is walking just fine! we generally seem to feel he's a male, simply because of his bass-y cooing & general demeanor, but we're not exactly 'king pigeon' experts (yet) :) We all seem to feel he's got excellent pet potential ~ he's VERY curious about the goings-on in the hospital, loves to sneak out & spy on us all, & when he's spotted & 'caught in the act' he struts his little feathered patoot full speed back to his 'roosting' box in our staff lounge. He's still a little shy of hands, but has come a loooong way in terms of trusting us & lets us pick him up without the wing-slap or beak attack now. With just a little more time, patience & gentle interaction, I have no doubt he might not mind hands at all & even seek them out one day. He's actually quite 'box-trained' in general ~ we gave him a nice box open in the front, with a blanket draped over one side for pigeon-privacy ~ when it's time to go to his night-time cage, we 'herd' him into his box (currently on the staff lounge floor) & he sits in there contentedly while we carry him to his shor-line, cooing all the while. He's quite content in his box & will return there often, kind of like his 'safe-base' where all is well & he can relax. Something akin to a dog who is crate-trained! His biggest charm by far (aside from his hide-n-seek games) is his love of conversation! He looooves to be cooed to & coos in return ~ although we can't quite decipher all his pigeon-speak yet, he is most definitely forming actual pigeon sentences with different inflections & tones... it's quite amazing what a language he has! i never knew! We're so used to Psittacines around here that he's been a great guru in terms of teaching us the Way of Pigeon. all that aside, he definitely loves company in many forms ~ and is curious about most critters that walk through our hospital doors, so i think he might possibly be content in an aviary setting as well... BUT he's got so much pet potential, i know we'd all love to see him in that type of setting moreso ~ he loves to explore & wander, and would probably be quite entertaining in an indoor house environment (pigeon-pants anyone?!) :) He is definitely a pigeon who needs at least *some* "out-time" daily to be completely happy in life ~ whether that's in a large aviary with other pigeons, or in a room of his own with some 'house-exploration' time every day. I would definitely avoid any type of wire cage bottom for him though so as not to exacerbate his foot issues any further in the future."
